We arrived in Cherbourg, France.

In the age of environmental protection: for what would you need such large and heavy towels.



Im Zeitalter vom Umweltschutz: wozu braucht man eigentlich so riesige und schwere Badetücher.

Die sind so riesig und schwer, dass man sich kaum vernünftig damit abtrocknen kann. Und braucht man nicht auch mehr Waschmittel, Wasser und Energie, um sie wieder sauber zu bekommen?



They were so giant and heavy that it was impossible to dry yourself reasonably. And would not you need more detergents, water, and energy to get them tidy again?

Until 20:30 hrs, you should place outside most of your bags... Quite early!



Bis 20:30 Uhr soll man das meiste Gepäck rausstellen... Ganz schön früh!

I mentioned the evening before that one of the cheeses tasted very nice to me. Today Tyson came: "Sir, you mentioned last night, that you liked this cheese very much. I kept a piece for you aside, in case you would like to have it again."



Ich hatte am Vorabend erwähnt, dass mir ein Käse sehr gut geschmeckt hat. Heute kommt Tyson: "Sir, Sie haben gestern Abend gesagt, dass Ihnen der Käse sehr gut geschmeckt hat. Ich hatte ein Stück für Sie zur Seite gestellt, falls Sie heute Morgen nochmals Lust darauf haben."

Again thanks a lot for the outstanding service to Joe and Tyson. We got a set of signed menus. So far, we got only this on our very first cruise on LILI MARLEEN 2006. Tyson reminded very much to Andrew, and it was a pleasure to see him working. Although he was "only" assistant waiter, the guest was always in the center of his attention: you could see it, when he was checking if Joe would be on the way back and then took a deep breath and went to the guest directly, without waiting for Joe's return. Joe was an excellent teacher. When the time allowed, he stood by in a certain distance and if he was intervening, you as a guest would not feet it, that was adjusting something. They both formed an incredible team. In other cases, the assistant waiters hid for not being at the front. I was curious to see in which roles with might see Joe and Tyson one day again.



Vielen Dank nochmals an Joe und Tyson für den tollen Service. Wir bekommen noch einen Satz unterschriebener Speisekarten. Das hatten wir bislang nur auf der allerersten Kreuzfahrt auf der LILI MARLEEN 2006. Tyson erinnert sehr stark an Andrew und es macht Spaß ihm bei der Arbeit zuzusehen. Obwohl er "nur" Hilfskellner ist, steht immer der Gast im Vordergrund: man sieht es, wenn er immer kurz guckt, ob Joe wieder kommt und dann einmal durchatmet und dann doch direkt zum Gast geht, ohne dass Joe wieder zurück ist. Joe ist ein sehr guter Lehrer. Wenn es die Zeit zulässt, bleibt er immer in einem gewissen Abstand stehen und wenn er eingreift, merkt man es als Gast nicht, dass er etwas nachjustiert. Sie bilden ein tolles Team. In anderen Fällen verstecken sich die Hilfskellner, um nicht an die Front zu müssen. Ich bin gespannt, in welchen Rollen wir Joe und und Tyson wiedersehen.

Congee. Mein Wohlfühl-Frühstück... niemals ein Problem wie hier auf der KONINGSDAM 2016: jeden Morgen im SB-Restaurant.

Oder wenn es gar nicht in der Passagier-Galley verfügbar, dann wurde jemand zur Crew-Galley geschickt, wie hier auf der ISLAND PRINCESS 2013. Aber hier geht das leider nur einmal die Woche für die Crew.



And in case, it would not be available in the passenger-galley, someone was sent to the crew-galley, like here on ISLAND PRINCESS 2013. But here, they had it only once per week for the crew.

I did not need to follow the protocol, but they were "Happy to serve" (on their name cards!) and they helped: Sandra took a lot of time to explain some procedures on board of VENTURA on the day of embarkation.



Ich musste ja dieses Mal nicht dem Protokoll folgen, sondern sie sind "Froh, um zu helfen" (steht auf den Visitenkarten!) und mir wurde geholfen: Sandra hat sich viel Zeit genommen, um mir ein paar Abläufe an Bord der VENTURA am Einschiffungstag zu erläutern.

Savita erklärt mir, dass ich für die individuellen Ausschiffungsanfrage zu spät sei und bittet mich, nochmals wiederzukommen, wenn wir unser Zeitfenter bekommen und es ihr zu überlassen, dass sie für uns noch unsere bevorzugte Ausschiffungszeit bekommt.



Savita explained that I was too late for requesting an individual debarkation time slot and asked me to come back once we got our time slot and should leave it to her to take care to get for us our preferred debarkation time slot.

That was by the way Hotel Director Sharma Daljit who took time to respond to my questions. He noted a lot: on my less good experiences but also on my good experiences.



Das ist übrigens Hoteldirektor Sharma Daljit, der sich Zeit für meine Fragen genommen hat. Er hat sich viel notiert, sowohl zu den weniger schönen Erfahrungen, aber auch zu schönen Erfahrungen.

Ich hätte ja gerne diese Mitarbeiterin von der Rezeption von der VENTURA 2008 wiedergetroffen und mich für den Daumen hoch von damals bedankt.

And the front desk replaced the ATM. I could withdraw money at the front desk. Not like on KONINGSDAM 2016 from an ATM.



Und die Rezeption ersetzt den Geldautomaten. Ich hätte Bargeld an der Rezeption beziehen dürfen. Nicht so wie auf der KONINGSDAM 2016 vom Geldautomaten.

Wieder zum Tazzine. Interessant ist das Schuhwerk der Kellnerinnen. Kaffee kommt sofort. Aber Cappuccino immer getrennt. Ich gucke mich bei den Leckereien um: nun weiß ich, was ein "Bap" ist: ein belegtes Sandwich aus einem Brioche.



Back to Tazzine. Interesting were the shoes of the waitress. Coffee came immediately. But cappuccino always separately. I looked around with the goodies: now I knew what a "Bap" was: a sandwich made of a brioche.

We needed to be back at 17:30 hrs.



17:30 Uhr müssen wir zurück sein.

Endlich ein Kreuzfahrtterminal, wie wir es gewohnt sind: auch mit Einkaufsmöglichkeiten lokaler Spezialitäten. Es gibt auch etwas zum Probieren. Ein Terminal alter Tage, als noch die Emmigranten in die neue Welt gefahren sind. Und ein schöner R4 vor dem Kreuzfahrtterminal.



Finally a cruise terminal, like we were used to have: with some shopping options for local specialties. You could also try something. A terminal of the old days when immigrants were moving to the new world. And a nice R4 (Renault 4) in front of the cruise terminals.

Pascal Méteyer of Alauna Taxi came to collect us for our tour through the Valley of Saire. He was also an excited photographer, and for him, it was no severe weather but a fantastic play between light and clouds which you needed to catch. Furthermore, he was a lover of jazz and classical music. He played it in the car.

Er ist auch ein begeisteter Fotograf und für ihn ist kein schlechtes Wetter, sondern ein fantastisches Spiel von Licht und Wolken, das man auf jeden Fall festhalten sollte. Außerdem ist er ein Liebhaber von Jazz und Klassik. Das hat er im Auto gespielt.

Am Fort du Cap l'Évi halten wir. Der Wind ist ziemlich stark. Aber eine schöne Aussicht.

We headed for the lighthouse of Gatteville-le-Phare, France.

Wir wollen nur einen Kaffee trinken und kehren hier in La Marina in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue ein. Als wir wieder rauskommen gibt es einen Doppelregenbogen.



We only wanted to have a cup of coffee and saw here La Marina in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, France. When we came out, we saw a double rainbow.

Now the advantage of a private tour came: when we left the café, it started to rain cats and dogs. We had day 7 of the cruise. That was a brilliant result for the end of October at the North Atlantic. We asked Pascal to suspend the tour and used the chance to have lunch here: from the fishermen's boat to the fish shop or into the pot. Because it was only off-peak-season: they had just in La Criée de Tomahawk in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue only a small but fresh selection. I did not get such a fresh scallop-potato-stew before.



Jetzt kommt der Vorteil einer privaten Tour: als wir das Lokal verlassen, fängt es an zu schütten. Wir haben Tag 7 der Kreuzfahrt. Das ist wohl ein super Ergebnis für Ende Oktober am Nordatlantik. Wir bitten Pascal die Tour abzubrechen und nutzen die Chance hier Mittag zu essen: vom Kutter in den Laden oder in den Kochtopf. Weil nur noch Nebensaison ist: es gibt in La Criée de Tomahawk in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue nur ein kleines aber frisches Angebot. So einen frischen Jakobsmuschel-Kartoffel-Eintopf habe ich zuvor noch nie bekommen.

Zurück in Cherbourg werden wir in der Innenstadt abgesetzt. Es regnet nicht mehr. Zwischendurch gibt es aber später kurze Schauer.



Back in Cherbourg, we were dropped off in the city center.









We went to Café Pompon. It should be the best pastry shop in Cherbourg. The lemon specialties should be only available in Cherbourg, and we tried them. Additionally, the chocolate roll was a temptation.



Wir gehen in das Café Pampon. Das soll die beste Patisserie in Cherbourg sein. Die Zitronen-Spezialitäten gibt es nur in Cherbourg und wir probieren sie. Zusätzlich lacht mich das Schokoladenbrötchen an.

In Cherbourg gibt es keinen kostenlosen Shuttle. Dafür einen kostenpflichtigen. Wobei die Innenstadt ist einmal um die Ecke vom Cruise Terminal. Aber anscheinend ist das ein Cross-Selling-Geschäft: der Shuttle hält nämlich an einem Einkaufszentrum Les Eléis, für die man vorher Coupons bekommt und die auch "Botschafter" zur Verfügung stellen. Aufgrund der Buchungsklasse, dürfen wir kostenlos den Shuttle nutzen. Es wird zwar jedes Mal, wenn ich einsteige, meine Karte eingelesen, aber es wird nichts mir berechnet. Alle anderen werden max. 2 Fahrten berechnet.



In Cherbourg, they had no complimentary shuttle. But one chargeable. Although the city center was only around the corner of the cruise terminal. But obviously it was a cross-selling-business: the shuttle stopped at a shopping center Les Eléis, and you could get coupons before and they provided some "ambassadors". Due to the booking class, we could use the shuttle for free. They scanned every time when I was boarding my card, but they did not charge me. All others were charged with a maximum of two rides.

In the cruise terminal, they also had an exhibition La Cité de la Mer. As a cruiser, you could get a discount coupon, and you could walk directly over from the cruise terminal.



Im Kreuzfahrtterminal ist auch die Ausstellung La Cité de la Mer. Als Kreuzfahrer bekommt man einen Rabattcoupon und darf direkt vom Kreuzfahrtterminal rüberlaufen.

Leider ist nur ein kleiner Teil der Ausstellung der Passagierschifffahrt gewidmet, so dass ich nicht reingehe.



But only a minor part of the exhibition was dedicated to the passenger maritime traffic that I decided not to walk in.

In the shop, they had great kits for sale.



Im Laden kann man aber tolle Bausätze kaufen.

Und es gibt tolle Bücher (leider nur alle auf französisch).



And they had wonderful books (but only in French).

But I had to buy one of the beautiful panorama-postcards.



Aber eine schöne Panorama-Postkarte muss ich doch kaufen.

Es geht raus aus Cherbourg. Wir sehen gegenüber das Fährterminal.



We were leaving Cherbourg. Opposite, we could see the ferry terminal.

We went to The Exchange to have a drink. Synerg Duo set up the stage. Meanwhile, they had this presentation on the TV-screen.



Wir gehen in The Exchange, um etwas zu trinken. Synerg Duo baut auf. Solange läuft auf dem Fernseher diese Endlosschleife.

Ich bin wirklich von der Karte mit alkoholfreien Getränken begeistert. Schnell ist aber unser Tisch im Restaurant bereit, so dass wir nicht mal dazu kommen, etwas zu bestellen. Schade, dass es keine Gelegenheit gibt, nochmals Synrg Duo zu hören. Denn als ich sehr spät wieder wiederkomme, ist alles wieder abgebaut.



I was excited of the soft drink menu. Our table was so quickly available that we had no chance to order something. So sad, that we had no occasion to listen to the Synrg Duo again. When I showed up later, everything was removed already.

A delicious last dinner. They had Cock-a-leekie-soup (Scottish chicken soup), and it was lightly bound without the flavor of mash potatoes. They offered me to prepare some congee for the next morning, but I said in the morning already no: special requests for the morning of debarkation were indecent, especially in case of a crew change. But here I asked to put two bowls away into the fridge and to warm up the next morning. And now they had the crispy rolls. I should ask the Hotel Director for an earlier meeting... subject it might influence the way of binding soups.



Ein tolles letztes Abendessen. Es gibt Cock-a-leekie-Suppe (schottische Hühnersuppe) und sie ist nur leicht gebunden ohne Kartoffelpürree-Geschmack. Man hatte mir ja angeboten auch morgen früh Congee zu machen, aber ich hatte das morgens dankend abgelehnt: Sonderwünsche am Ausschiffungsmorgen gehören sich nicht, vor allem wenn Crew-Wechsel ist. Aber hier bitte darum, mir zwei Schalen in den Kühlschrank zu stellen und mir am nächsten Morgen wieder aufzuwärmen. Auch gibt es jetzt knusprige Brötchen. Ich hätte vielleicht schon früher um ein Gespräch mit dem Hoteldirektor bitten sollen... falls das die Bindung der Suppe maßgeblich beeinflusst hat.

Zum Schluss gibt es noch eine tolle Produktionsshow "Hot Ticket". Mit vielen Lieblingsstücken, wie z.B. "Defying Gravity" aus "Wicked". Ich bin begeistert... Und sogar ein drittes Mal innerhalb von sieben Tagen "Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons" aus "Jersey Boys". Am Schluss muss ich noch ein paar Selfies mit den Darstellern machen.



Finally, they had a great production show "Hot Ticket". With a lot of my favorite songs like "Defying Gravity" from "Wicked". I was excited... And a third time within seven days "Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons" from "Jersey Boys". In the end, I needed to have some selfies with the actors.
