Bruno got his hard-boiled eggs. The only problem: on an English ship, it was unused to serve ice water in the morning.



Bruno bekommt seine hart-gekochten Eier. Einziges Problem: auf englischen Schiffen, ist es unüblich morgens schon Eiswasser zu servieren.

Ankunft in Getxo.



Arrival in Getxo, Spain.

Getxo was more or less the Warnemünde, Germany of Rostock, Germany. The city of Rostock was not really at the seaside.



Getxo ist quasi das Warnemünde zu Rostock.

Getxo liegt eben an der Mündung des Flusses Nervións und Bilbao liegt daher nicht direkt am Meer, so wie man eben von Rostock auch noch durch die Warnow muss, bevor man das offene Meer erreicht.



Getxo was at the mouth of the river Nervións and Bilbao, Spain was not at the seaside either, like Rostock since you needed to pass the river Warnow until you reached the open sea.

Compared to Gijón, you had a nice new cruise terminal, where you also could find toilets, etc.. Here they also offered taxi-tours. And some from the tourist office who helped.



Im Gegensatz zu Gijón gibt es hier ein schönes neues Cruise Terminal, in dem es auch Toiletten usw. gibt. Hier werden auch Taxitouren angeboten. Und es gibt ein paar Mitarbeiter vom Fremdenverkehrsbüro, die einem helfen.

Und hier schlägt das Herz eines Shipspotters höher: Freier Blick auf das Schiff direkt außerhalb des abgezäunten Geländes zwischen den zwei Anlegestellen für Kreuzfahrtschiffe.



Here, the heart of a ship spotter would beat more: Free view to the ship just outside the fenced area between the two cruise ship piers.

The cruise terminal here was not in somewhere in nowhere like in Gijón. After a few walking minutes you found a shopping center, and in walking distance there was a subway too, to get into the city center. But they offered a complimentary shuttle which took you to Calle Elcano in Spanish or Elcano Kalea on Euskara (Basque). It was right around the corner of the Museum of the Fine Arts (Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao/Bilboko Arte Ederren Museoa), right in front of Museo Plaza (Square in front of the museum) or Euskadi Plaza (Roundabout in front of the museum). So it was very centrally located in the city.



Das Kreuzfahrtterminal liegt nicht so ganz in der Pampa wie in Gijón. Nach nur wenigen Gehminuten gibt es ein Shopping Center und auch eine U-Bahn ist in Laufentfernung erreichbar, um in die Stadt zu kommen. Aber es wird kostenlos ein Shuttle angeboten, der einen bis Calle Elcano auf Spanish bzw. Elcano Kalea auf Euskara (Baskisch). Quasi um die Ecke vom Museum für Bildende Künste (Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao/Bilboko Arte Ederren Museoa) direkt an der Museo Plaza (Platz vor dem Museum) bzw. Euskadi Plaza (Kreisverkehr vor dem Museum). Also sehr zentral in der Stadt.

Auf den ersten paar Metern, die wir laufen, fallen uns schöne Geschäfte auf: aber es gibt nirgendst eine Pittahaya. Schöne Kunst und Architektur und sehr schöne Fußgängerampeln, in der die grünen Ampelmännchen immer schneller laufen, je weniger Zeit zum Überschreiten der Straße bleibt.



On the very first yards, we were walking, some nice shops attracted our attention: but none of them offered a dragon fruit. Beautiful artworks and architecture and a brilliant traffic signal for pedestrians. The little green man in the traffic signal walked faster the less you had to cross the road.

With Abando y Barra we went to have the first cup of coffee.



Bei Abando y Barra gehen wir einen ersten Kaffee trinken.

Ein schönes Frühstücksangebot. Aber das alles entspricht nicht meinen Erwartungen. Kein klassisches Frühstück.



A nice selection for breakfast. But it did not meet my expections. No classical breakfast.





So I stayed only with a cup of coffee and a small roll with some Spanish ham.



So bleibt es nur bei einer Tasse Kaffee und einem kleinen Brötchen mit spanischem Schinken.

Um die Ecke startet unsere Segway Tours von Segway Bilbao. Allerdings sie benutzen keine klassischen Segways sondern Ninebots, die ich persönlich nicht so bequem finde. Und ich habe Pech: meines ist leider nicht so gewartet, wie ich es sonst gewohnt bin und ein kleiner Unfall an einer Bordsteinkante passiert. Aber nichts, wofür man behandelt werden muss. Victor führt uns durch eine tolle Stadt und in der kurzen Zeit sehen wir sehr viele Facetten von Bilbao. In der kurzen Zeit stellen wir fest: eine Stadt, die man unbedingt intensiver erleben und besuchen sollte, als nur im Rahmen eines kurzen Tagesaufenthaltes eines Kreuzfahrtschiffes. Modern und alt liegen hier so schön zusammen. Victor hätte uns gerne mehr gezeigt, aber wir müssen leider weiter.



Around the corner, our Segway tour of Segway Bilbao would start. Indeed they did not use classical Segways but Ninebots, which I personally did not like them because of the missing comfort. And I had unluck: mine was not well maintained like I am used, and I had a minor accident at a curbside. But nothing serious, for you, needed a treatment. Victor took us through a great city and in a short time we discovered a lot of faces of Bilbao. In this short time, we found out, that you had to see and experience this city more intense but during a short one day call of a cruise ship. Modern and old were close by. Victor loved to show us more, but we needed to head on.

Pinchos or Pintxos was a mixture between Spanish Tapas, and Danish Smørrebrøds, and Swiss Brötlis: small pieces of art to eat and enjoy.



Pinchos bzw. Pintxos ist eine Mischung zwischen spanischen Tapas und dänischen Smørrebrøds und schweizerischen Brödlis: kleine Kunstwerke zum Essen und Genießen.

Obwohl wir spät daran sind, wir halten schnell im Café Bizuete um kurz einen Haps zu essen.



Although we were very late, we stopped by at Café Bizuete to have a quick bite.

Unfortunately, they had an extensive selection.



Leider ist Angebot zu groß.

So viel Zeit muss sein. Kunst für das Auge und für den Magen.



You needed to take some time for some art for your eyes and your stomach.

We were heading for the Guggenheim Museum for the art in your spirit and in your soul. And here, we booked a private tour too, which was guided by Ana. Unfortunately, taking pictures was strictly prohibited in the Guggenheim Museum, but on the outside areas, in the atrium and on the levels which were part of the atrium. So that was, why there were not so many pictures here. It was a fantastic tour, which only was linked to the history of the museum and the architecture but also the exhibits and the artists. For the ship's excursion, they charged 44 GBP per person. We paid for the private tour less slightly more (although we had to pay for the regular admission on top) and could see and learn a lot in a short period.



Auf geht es ins Guggenheim Museum für die Kunst im Geist und in der Seele. Auch hier haben wir eine private Führung gebucht, die von Ana geführt wird. Leider besteht im Guggenheim Musum ein Fotografierverbot, außer auf den Außenflächen, im Atrium und auf der Atriumsebene. Deswegen gibt es hier nur wenige Fotos. Es ist eine ganz tolle Tour, die nicht nur auf die Geschichte des Museums und die Architektur eingeht, sondern auch auf die Exponate und deren Künstler. Für die Schiffstour wären 44 GBP pro Person angefallen. Wir zahlen für unsere private Führung einen winzigen Tick mehr (obwohl wir noch die regulären Eintrittskarten lösen müssen) und können in sehr kurzer Zeit sehr viel sehen und vor allem erfahren.

Back on board: it was still so warm - you had to have use of your balcony.



Zurück an Bord: es ist noch so warm - da muss man den Balkon nutzen.

Wir erleben noch eine schöne Ausfahrt. Viele sind an den Pier genommen, aber wohl nur zum Angeln und in der Hoffnung, dass wir die Fische mit den Propellern aufwirbeln. Nur wenige winken zurück, obwohl wir so nah sind. Das ist eben nicht Hamburg.



We experienced another nice set sail. Many came to the pier, but more for fishing and to hope that the propellers would swirl the fishes from the ground. Only a few were waving back, although we were so close. It was not just like in Hamburg, Germany.

Zu den wenigen echten Ärgernissen: nach unseren Erfahrungen auf der VENTURA 2008, wollen wir sicher sein, dass wir passend angezogen sind. Auf Rückfrage hieß es beispielsweise: bitte keine Jeans, aber man kommt doch mit der Jeans rein. "Black Tie" bedeutet nicht zwingend auch schwarze Krawatte. Lt. dem Plan, der auf der P&O Homepage hinterlegt ist, sollten es 2 formelle Abende geben und 1 Themenabend: 60er und 70er. Ich habe mir dafür extra ein Flower-Power-Hemd gekauft, allerdings nicht in den Farben von damals, so dass man es auch heute ab und zu anziehen kann. In der Übersicht am Anfang der Reise steht es auch noch für heute drin. Und es steht auch eine Schwarz&Weiß-Nacht drin, die auf der Homepage nicht erwähnt wurde. Aber heute steht das Motto im Tagesprogramm nicht drin. Später hat mir der Hoteldirektor erklärt, dass man es schlicht vergessen hatte. Ich bin einer der wenigen, der daher so herumläuft und sich extra das Hemd dafür gekauft hat.



Coming to the few offenses we had: after our experience on VENTURA 2008, we wanted to make sure that we were dressed appropriately. So we requested and got answers like that we better should not wear jeans but there was no problem to show up with jeans. "Black Tie" did not mean that you should wear a black tie. According to the schedule which you could find on P&O's website, we should have two formal nights and one themed night: 60s and 70s. I bought for this event a Flower-Power-Shirt but not in the original colors, so you could still wear it nowadays too from time to time. In the overview, which we got at the beginning of the cruise, it was yet mentioned for today. And they also said a Black&White-Night, which was not mentioned on the website. But for today the theme was not mentioned in the daily programme. Later the Hotel Director explained that they just forgot to publish it. So I was one of the few guests, who was moving around that way and bought especially for this event the shirt.

Unfortunately, I was still so upset about that and that we should wait one hour again for a table: although meanwhile, we went quite early. The Glasshouse they had a lovely table, but we should move to a smaller table. Since I was already edgy and the waiter, who tried to send us away, noticed it, he let us sitting here. My mood became better when I was reading the bar menu. This was really cheap! They did not add any service charges on top! Neither with the food nor with the beverages. Here, we could take Bruno's father with us: the most expensive Brandy was 10.75 GBP. No risk like on WESTERDAM 2010. Then I saw that they had cranberry juice: that was making me upset again because I could get it onboard, but not complimentary for breakfast. But it was so highly concentrated, that you could not breathe anymore... that was healthy for sure! My mood was now so down that our charming, attentive, and outstanding waitress got it all. But she was a really FULL PROFESSIONAL and could catch everything gallantly, that I had to apologize for my habit and could enjoy the remainder of the night with an excellent dinner: Karabi. My rib-eye-steak was pure perfection! I let her showing me the Menu A which should follow on the remainder of the cruise, and I was upset again: they had Chimichurri on the menu. This sauce for my steak tonight would be the crown of my steak...



Leider bin ich darüber verärgert und auch dass wir wieder etwa eine Stunde auf einen Tisch warten sollen: wobei wir mittlerweile immer schon sehr früh gehen. In The Glasshouse gibt es einen sehr schönen Tisch, aber wir sollen uns umsetzen und einen kleineren Tisch nehmen. Da ich schon sehr gereizt bin und der Kellner, der versucht, uns zu verscheuchen bemerkt, lässt er uns hier sitzen. Meine Laune steigt, als ich mir die Zeit nehme die Getränkekarte zu studieren. Das ist hier echt günstig! Auf die Preise auf den Karten kommen keine Service Charges mehr drauf! Weder beim Essen noch bei den Getränken. Und hier könnten wir auch problemlos Brunos Vater hierher führen: der teuerste Cognac liegt bei 10,75 GBP. Hier droht also kein Risiko, wie auf der WESTERDAM 2010. Dann sehe ich, dass es Cranberry Saft gibt: das ärgert mich jetzt wieder, weil es ihn doch an Bord gibt, aber eben nicht kostenlos zum Frühstück. Und der ist so konzentriert, dass einem die Luft weg bleibt... der ist garantiert gesund! Meine Laune ist so mies, dass leider unsere sehr charmante, aufmerksame und tolle Kellnerin alles abbekommt. Aber sie ist ein echter VOLLPROFI und fängt das so galant auf, dass ich mich bei ihr entschuldige und den restlichen Abend bei einem exzellenten Abendessen genießen kann: Karabi. Mein Rib-Eye-Steak ist Perfektion pur! Ich lasse mir die Karte vom Menü A zeigen, die noch auf der restlichen Kreuzfahrt folgen soll und ärgere mich wieder: dort steht sogar Chimichurri auf der Karte. Die Sauce heute Abend zu meinem Steak wäre die Krönung meines Steaks gewesen...

Der Ärger geht weiter... Wieder zur Show "Walk like a Man" in der Havana Lounge. Wir bekommen hinter der Bar Plätze, mit Blick auf Monitore, die allerdings auf den Schrott gehören, samt Akustik-Anlage. Spaß ist das keinesfalls, wenn man nicht in der 1. Reihe sitzt. Sigi erträgt es allerdings sehr gut bei einem Pink Gin Tonic. Und ich finde auch meinen Spaß wieder: Hinter uns stehen, singen, tanzen vier Schwestern, die ganz ganz toll als Hintergrundsängerinnen agieren und soviel Spaß bringen, dass man seinen ganzen Ärger wieder vergisst. Wegen eines medizinischen Notfalls, der sogar dazu führt, dass wir am morgigen Tag sogar in La Rochelle wieder umdrehen müssen, gelingt es mir leider nicht, deren Namen zu ermitteln. Notfall geht vor. Schade. Ich hätte doch zu gerne vorgeschlagen, dass sie gemeinsam auf der Bühne mit "Frankie Valli und The Four Seasons" auftreten sollten... Die hatten übrigens eben in Abweichung zur 1. Show auf ein paar Klassiker verzichtet, und durch etwas "schwächere" Lieder ersetzt, damit eben die 2. Show hier auch mit ein paar "starken" Liedern untermalt ist.



The trouble continued... Again to the show "Walk like a Man" in the Havana Lounge. We got only seats behind the bar to the screens, which should be scrapped including the entire sound system. It was no fun if you did not get any seats in the front row. Sigi could stand it very well with a Pink Gin Tonic. And I had fun again: Behind us, four nurses from the medical center were standing, singing, dancing which were acting very wonderful as background singers and they made so much fun, that I almost forgot all the trouble. I could not make it find out their names because of a medical emergency we had the next day, which made us even returning to La Rochelle, France the next day. Emergency first. So sad. I really love to suggest that they should perform together with "Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons"... By the way: they moved some of the stronger classic hits from the 1st show to the 2nd show and replaced them by some "weaker" songs so that you had also performed here some "stronger" songs in the 2nd show.

And in the atrium, they had the disco event.



Und im Atrium steppt der Bär. Dort ist auch noch Disco angesagt.
