Tag/Day 13 nach der/after VISTA SKY in Oftringen, Switzerland

Obwohl ein riesiger Parkplatz vor dem Hotel ist: ohne Parkkarte gibt es Ärger. Und ich könnte auch japanisches Frühstück haben: es gibt zum Kauf japanische Nudelsuppen im Automat. Frühstück im Holiday Inn Express: Es ist kostenlos und wie immer ein wenig "spartanisch". Aber immer noch großzügiger als viele andere Hotels, die teurer sind. Ovomaltine und Bircher Müesli gibt es auch.



Although there is a vast parking lot in front of the hotel, there is trouble without a parking card. And I could also have a Japanese breakfast: there are Japanese noodle soups for sale in the vending machine. Breakfast at the Holiday Inn Express: It is free and, as always, a little "Spartan". But still more generous than many other more expensive hotels. Ovomaltine and Bircher muesli are also available.

We are heading into the canton of Basel-Landschaft (or Baselland or Baselbiet). I worked here for a few years. But I never had time to look around. I am catching up on that a little today. Very beautiful here.



Es geht weiter in den Kanton Basel-Landschaft (oder auch Baselland oder Baselbiet). Hier habe ich einige Jahre gearbeitet. Ich hatte aber nie Zeit, mir die Umgebung anzusehen. Das hole ich heute ein wenig nach. Sehr schön hier.

Mein TomTom schlägt vor, dass ich durch Deutschland an Basel vorbeifahre. Ich wurde zwar entlassen, aber ich käme mir jetzt wie ein reuiger Dieb vor, wenn ich deswegen Basel vermeiden würde. Ich habe auch viele schöne Erinnerungen. Ich mache Selfies von der Haltestelle, an der ich jeden Morgen spazieren gegangen bin. Ich sehe von außen das Restaurant, in dem wir mittags essen waren: Gasthof zur Saline. Hier habe ich zu oft Gemüsecremesuppe und Basler Mehlsuppe bekommen. Beides kann ich jetzt nicht mehr sehen. Ich gehe nochmals bei meiner Arztpraxis vorbei: Medix Toujours. Hier arbeitet man mit angestellten Ärzten und braucht nicht unbedingt einen Termin. Und am Wochenende sind sie auch da. Die medizinische Versorgung ist schon hier in der Schweiz besser. Sonntags kann man an Coop Pronto Märkten auch einkaufen. Ich vermisse meine Aquafitness Kurse im Hallenbad Muttenz. Und auch an meiner Wohnung komme ich vorbei: 4. Etage unter dem Dach und schön preiswert für Baseler Verhältnisse. Aber im Sommer doch mal bis 35°C nachts in der Wohnung.



My TomTom GPS suggests that I drive past Basle through Germany. I was released, but I would feel like a repentant thief if I avoided Basle because of that. I also have a lot of fond memories. I take selfies of the stop where I used to walk every morning. From the outside, I can see the restaurant where we had lunch: Gasthof zur Saline. I got vegetable cream soup and Basel flour soup too often here. I can no longer see either. I will go to my doctor's office again: Medix Toujours. Here you work with employed doctors, and you do not necessarily need an appointment. And they are there on weekends too. Medical care is already better here in Switzerland. You can also shop at Coop Pronto markets on Sundays. I miss my aqua fitness courses in the Muttenz indoor pool. And I also pass my apartment: 4th floor under the roof and good value for money by Basel standards. But in summer up to 95°F at night in the apartment.

We are leaving Switzerland and entering France. In Geispolsheim, we eat our last lunch together on this trip. I made a reservation at the S'Geisstuewel. An excellent choice that everyone likes.



Wir verlassen die Schweiz und reisen in Frankreich ein. In Geispolsheim essen wir auf dieser Reise unser letztes gemeinsames Mittagessen. Ich habe im S'Geisstuewel reserviert. Eine sehr gute Wahl, die allen zusagt.

In Frankreich nutzen wir die Autobahn und bezahlen Maut.

It is more convenient to pay and drive in France. And it is faster and shorter too.



Das ist angenehmer dafür zahlen und in Frankreich zu fahren. Und schneller und kürzer ist es auch.

Auf der Rückfahrt schließt sich der Kreis: wir fahren nochmals am Saarpolygon vorbei.



On the way back, we come full circle: we drive past the Saar polygon again.

After the vacation, my new life begins three days later. I would need about an hour to drive to the company.



Nach dem Urlaub beginnt drei Tage später mein neues Leben. Ich bräuchte eigentlich mit dem Auto etwa eine Stunde in die Firma.

Ich entscheide mich jedoch nur bis Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof mit dem Auto zu fahren und anschließend 30 km in 20 Minuten im RegionalExpress zurückzulegen.



However, I decide to drive to Darmstadt Central Station by car and then cover 19 miles in 20 minutes on the RegionalExpress.

And instead of taking the subway, I take my bike from the central train station to the office. I feel good. I feel terrific about it. The journey to take the step back into working life is right for me, and I'm starting where I left off 25 years ago. Here you rely on the strengths that I was able to demonstrate 25 years ago. And with this strength, I also organized this trip. I look forward to our next trip.



Und statt U-Bahn nehme ich mein Fahrrad vom Hauptbahnhof ins Büro. Mir tut es gut. Ich fühle mich dabei richtig gut. Die Reise, um mich für den Schritt zurück in das Arbeitsleben, tut mir gut und ich fange dort an, wo ich vor 25 Jahren aufgehört habe. Hier setzt man auf die Stärken, die ich bereits vor 25 Jahren beweisen konnte. Und mit dieser Stärke habe ich auch diese Reise organisiert. Ich freue mich auf unsere nächste Reise.

Tag/Day 12 nach der/after VISTA SKY in St. Moritz - Oftringen, Switzerland

Allegra - Guten Morgen in Romanisch. In Graubünden wird es noch gesprochen. Ich nutze den schönen Morgen, um ein wenig durch St. Moritz zu laufen und zu entdecken. Ich werde heute noch lange genug im Auto sitzen. Nach mir dreht Bruno auch mal eine Runde. Ich bin jedoch zum See gelaufen und er läuft ein wenig nach oben. Sehr ärgerlich: gestern Abend suchte ich dringendst eine Einkaufsmöglichkeit und stelle fest: die Zeiten, in denen die Leute an der Rezeption alles wussten, sind vorbei. Am Besten fragt man sie nicht mehr und recherchiert selbst im Internet die Öffnungszeiten und Möglichkeiten.



Allegra - Good morning in Romansh (another official language in Switzerland). It is still spoken by 60,000 inhabitants in Graubünden. I use the beautiful morning to walk a little through St. Moritz and discover. I will be sitting in the car long enough today. Bruno does a lap after me. However, I ran to the lake, and it runs up a little. It was not delightful: last night, I was urgently looking for a place to shop and realized: the days when people at the reception knew everything is over. The best thing to do is to stop asking them and search for internet opening times and options.

While walking back, I happened to discover a bakery that has a sale on the back right out of the bakery. I can run into the bakery myself and sort of pick the bread fresh out of the oven. Later, I also discover the Bad Bakery's front entrance, but shopping directly in the bakery is much more exciting.



Während ich zurücklaufe entdecke ich zufällig eine Bäckerei, die hier einen Verkauf auf der Rückseite direkt aus der Backstube hat. Ich darf selbst in die Backstube reinlaufen und mir quasi das Brot frisch aus dem Ofen heraussuchen. Später entdecke ich auch den Vordereingang der Bäckerei Bad, aber der Einkauf direkt in der Backstube ist viel spannender.

Leider gibt es zum Frühstück keine Engadiner Nusstorte, aber dafür eine typisch schweizerische Rüeblitorte. Natürlich nehme ich eine Ovomaltine zum Frühstück, die hier stilgerecht in Silberkannen und Milch zum Nachgießen serviert wird. Und wenn ich schon in der Schweiz bin: ein wenig Bircher Müesli muss sein.



Unfortunately, there is no Engadine nut cake for breakfast, but a typical Swiss carrot cake. Of course, I have an Ovomaltine for breakfast, which is served here in a stylish way in silver jugs and milk for topping up. And while I am already in Switzerland: a little Bircher muesli is a must.

Time to go to St. Moritz train station. There we are offered an upgrade to the Excellence Class of the Glacier Express for just under CHF 400.00 (approx. 400.00 USD)/person. The food and all drinks are included in the price and personal service on-site. We wanted first-class tickets, but there are no longer any contiguous seats. But it is better to have a separate compartment for the 2nd class than to sit around. You get the same attentive service at your seat in 2nd class.



Zeit zum Bahnhof St. Moritz zu fahren. Dort wird uns noch für knapp 400,00 CHF/Person ein Upgrade in die Excellence Class des Glacier-Express angeboten. Das Essen und alle Getränke sind im Preis inkludiert und ein persönlicher Service am Platz. Wir wollten ja 1. Klasse-Tickets, aber es gibt keine zusammenhängende Plätze mehr. Aber besser ein eigenes Abteil für die 2. Klasse, als verteilt zu sitzen. Man bekommt ja auch in der 2. Klasse den gleichen aufmerksamen Service am Platz.

Ich fahre mit dem Auto über den Albulapass Richtung Bergün. Typisch Schweiz. Aber ich habe Pech! Drei Mal innerhalb einer Minute kreuzt der Glacier-Express meinen Weg, aber ich konnte nicht halten, um zu fotografieren. Es ist sehr beeindruckend.



I drive by car over the Albula Pass towards Bergün. Typically Switzerland. But I am unlucky! The Glacier Express crosses my path three times within a minute, but I could not stop to take photos. It is awe-inspiring.

I manage to get to Bergün (in Romansh: Bravuogn) a few minutes ahead of the Glacier Express. Due to a delay, a Bernina Express train is here. And unfortunately, I do not have time: the Albula Railway Museum is here. In the middle of a UNESCO world heritage site.



Mir gelingt es wenige Minuten vor dem Glacier-Express in Bergün (auf Romanisch: Bravuogn) zu sein. Wegen einer Verspätung ist hier noch ein Zug des Bernina-Expresses hier. Und leider habe ich keine Zeit: das Bahnmuseum Albula ist hier. Mitten in einem UNESCO Welterbe.

Die Weiterfahrt im Auto ist auch sehr spannend. Ich halte mehrmals an, um Fotos zu machen.

It goes on to Filisur. Here in the train station's former ticket hall (Bahnhöfli = litte train station), I take a short "Z'nüni" break (a coffee and a croissant snack break at 09:00 hrs). I get to the only shop in all of Switzerland that does not offer card payments, and there is no ATM in that place. I drive past the Landwasser Viaduct.



Es geht weiter nach Filisur. Hier in der ehemaligen Schalterhalle (Bahnhöfli) des Bahnhofes mache ich eine kurze "Z'nüni"-Pause (ein Kaffee und ein Gipfeli). Ich erwische den einzigen Laden in der ganzen Schweiz, der keine Kartenzahlung anbietet und in dem Ort gibt es keinen Geldautomaten. Ich fahre am Landwasserviadukt vorbei.

In Disentis/Munster bin ich wieder vor dem Glacier-Express da. Hier findet der Betriebsübergang von der Rhätischen Bahn zur Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn statt. Der bisherige Schaffner der Rhätischen Bahn hat sich sehr nett um Bruno und seine Familie gekümmert. Im Zug beginnen die Vorbereitungen, um das Mittagessen zu servieren.

Ich habe das Glück, dass ich von der Straße aus sehe, wie der Glacier-Express langsam aufsteigt. Und ich erreiche ein Viadukt vor ihm ein. Genauso spannend ist es im Glacier-Express zu sitzen, wie dem Glacier-Express von hier unten zuzugucken.

Immer wieder erfüllen sich auch im Auto die Klischees der Schweiz. Nur lila Kühe sehe ich keine.

In Andermatt, I have a little time for a bowl of soup at the train station restaurant. And the Glacier Express comes down along the Gotthard massif.



In Andermatt habe ich kurz Zeit für ein Süppchen am Bahnhofbuffet. Und schon kommt der Glacier-Express entlang des Gotthardmassivs hinunter.

Eigentlich will ich im Autoverlad durch den Furkatunnel. Ich habe um 5 Minuten die letzte Abfahrt verpasst. Eine Mitarbeiterin der Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn kommt heraus und meint, dass man selbst über den Furkapass fahren soll. Man wäre schneller in Brig, als auf den nächsten Autoverlad zu warten. Ich habe Glück: hier fahre ich auf der Strecke, in der Dreharbeiten für James Bond 007 "Goldfinger" mit Sean Connery, Gerd Fröbe, Tania Mallet, Harold Sakata stattfanden. Ich muss hier natürlich halten. Weiter geht es an dem Rhônegletscher vorbei. Vielmehr, was noch von ihm übrig ist. Es ist eine tolle Fahrt.



I want to go through the Furka tunnel in the car. I missed the last departure by 5 minutes. Weiter fahren wir durch das Rhônetal.

Wir kommen im Berner Oberland aus. Am Thunersee halten wir kurz vor dem Spiezer Bahnhof, um ein paar Bilder zu machen. Rechts sehen wir Richtung Interlaken mit dem Hintergrund Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau. Links sehen wir Richtung Thun.



We come from the Bernese Oberland. At Lake Thun, we stop shortly before the Spiez train station to take a few pictures. On the right, we see Interlaken's direction with the Eiger, Mönch (Monk), and Jungfrau (Virgin) in the background. On the left, we are facing Thun.

Thun knows Bruno and me from an event in the Swiss Logistics Manager Club, to which I once belonged. We have already been to the Thun Festival twice on the lake stage in Lake Thun. Unfortunately, nothing is shown this year. It is nice anyway. It was Thomas Cook who discovered Thun for himself. Up to this point, he led the first package tour groups to take the ships to Interlaken later and take them up the mountains.



Thun kennen Bruno und ich von einer Veranstaltung im schweizerischen Logistikleiterclub, dem ich mal angehört habe. Wir waren schon zwei Mal bei den Thuner Seespielen auf der Seebühne im Thunersee. Dieses Jahr wird leider nichts gezeigt. Schön ist es trotzdem. Es war Thomas Cook, der Thun für sich entdeckte. Bis hierher führte er die ersten Pauschalreisegruppen, um später mit den Schiffen weiter nach Interlaken zu fahren und auf die Berge hinaufzuführen.

Im Hotel Krone essen wir am Ufer der Aare. Interessanterweise gibt es hier ein China-Restaurant für Schweizer. In Luzern gäbe es beispielsweise auch China-Restaurant für Chinesen (für die Reisegruppen). Es schmeckt zu schweizerisch: vermutlich mit Knorr Aromat und Maggi verfeinert. Ich nehme einen Fitnessteller: in der Schweiz ist das Fleisch mit Salat ohne Sättigungsbeilage.



We eat at the Hotel Krone on the banks of the Aare. Interestingly, there is a Chinese restaurant for Swiss people here. In Lucerne, for example, there is also a Chinese restaurant for the Chinese (for the tour groups). It tastes too Swiss: probably refined with Knorr Aromat (Swiss seasoning mix) and Maggi (liquid Swiss seasoning mix). I take a so-called fitness plate: in Switzerland, the meat with a salad is without a side dish.

Since I do not feel like buying an annual vignette (road toll sticker) for a rental car to drive through Switzerland, we drive past the Emmental.



Da ich keine Lust habe für eine Durchfahrt in der Schweiz eine Jahresvignette für einen Mietwagen zu kaufen, fahren wir am Emmental vorbei.

Wir fahren einem sehr schönen Abendhimmel entgegen.
