Tag/Day 9 auf der/on VISTA SKY in Kelheim, Germany

Noch einmal meine Runden im Panorama Salon laufen.

But I have never run so little in time as I did this morning.



Noch nie bin ich aber so wenig gelaufen in der Zeit, wie heute Morgen.

Der Kapitän hätte ja nett sein können, und alle anderen Gäste zu einer Notfallübung auf dem offenen Deck wecken können. Ich denke, dass niemand ihn deswegen hätte erschlagen hätte, sondern vermutlich wäre er als Held der Arbeit geehrt worden. Vermutlich der schönste Teil der Reise im Altmühltal und hier so früh durch, dass keiner es mitbekommt. Nur ich. Dieser Abschnitt hier gehört in den Tagesabschnitt einer Flusskreuzfahrt. 180 Yogamatten und alle Gäste flach auf dem Sonnendeck hinlegen und genießen lassen. Man hätte für die Reise noch das Doppelte nehmen können und als Meditionskreuzfahrt anbieten können. Ja mei - ist das scheen hier!!! Ich verstehe nun die Gegner des Main-Donau-Kanals, die hier nie den Ausbau wollten. Keine Ahnung wie es zuvor ausgesehen hat. Vermutlich nicht so breit und nicht so tief. Aber ich denke mal, dass der Charakter unverändert ist. Später erfahre ich Kelheim, wie beliebt dieser Abschnitt bei Urlaubern ist - egal auf dem Wasser oder zu Fuß oder per Rad entlang des Ufers. Der Blick auf die Holzbrücke in Essing ("Tatzlwurm") und Burg Randeck bildet für den einer der Super-Mega-Hpyer-XXL-Höhepunkte der gesamten Reise. Dazu noch die spiegelglatte Altmühl in der sich die Landschaft spiegelt und der Bodennebel wieder über einige Stellen im Wasser. Ich könnte jetzt wieder ins Bett gehen und ich könnte am nächsten Tag erzählen, dass ich einen erlebnisreichen Tag hatte.



The captain could have been friendly and woke up all the other guests for an emergency exercise on the open deck. I think no one would have killed him for it, but probably would have been honored as a work hero. Probably the most beautiful part of the trip in the Altmühl valley and here so early that nobody notices. Just me. This section belongs to the day section of a river cruise. One hundred eighty yoga mats and let all the guests lie flat on the sun deck and enjoy. You could have charged twice as much for the trip and offered it as a meditation cruise. Yes, my oh my - that is nice here! I now understand the opponents of the Main-Danube Canal who never wanted to expand here. I have no idea what it looked like before. Probably not that wide and not that deep. But I guess the character is unchanged. Later I found out in Kelheim, Germany, how popular this section is with holidaymakers - whether on the water or foot or by bike along the shore. The view of the wooden bridge in Essing and Randeck Castle is one of the super-mega-Hpyer-XXL highlights of the entire trip. Besides, the mirror-smooth Altmühl river in which the landscape is reflected and the ground fog again over some water places. I could go back to bed now and tell the next day that I had an eventful day.

I can no longer see any locks. Now comes the Kelheim lock, and with it, we switch from the Altmühl river to the Danube river. Only the gray heron is happy for better fish opportunities and patiently waits on the lantern for its chance. I wonder what this strange "hammer on the extra-long handle" is for, lowered shortly before our exit, and later raised again.



Ich kann keine Schleusen mehr sehen. Nun kommt die Schleuse Kelheim und damit wechseln wir von der Altmühl in die Donau. Nur der Graureiher freut sich für besseren Möglichkeiten zu fischen und wartet geduldig auf der Laterne auf seine Chance. Ich frage mich, wozu dieser merkwürdige "Hammer am extralangen Stiel" ist, der kurz vor unserer Ausfahrt heruntergelassen wird und später wieder aufgerichtet wird.

Pünktlich zum Sonnenaufgang legen wir in der Altmühl am Anleger auf der Höhe der Befreiungshalle an, die über uns thront. Was für ein gewaltiger Anblick! Ich würde es in Zukunft in einem Atemzug mit der Akropolis in Athen nennen. Ich habe auch noch nie von der Befreiungshalle gehört oder gesehen. Eine Gelegenheit hier hoch zu fahren haben wir heute nicht. Auch Kelheim sagt mir gar nichts. Nie gehört - trotz Erdkunde-Leistungskurs. Kreisstadt mit eigenem Kennzeichen: KEH. Drei Buchstaben: liegt bestimmt in Ostdeutschland oder es ist so unbedeutend, dass es für zwei Buchstaben nicht gereicht hat. Ich hatte sogar erwogen, hier gar nichts zu machen, an Bord zu bleiben und in Ruhe Koffer zu packen und das Sonnendeck zu genießen. Ich wollte dieses Jahr Burj Khalifa in Dubai, Petra in Jordanien und den Suezkanal sehen. Stattdessen bin ich hier in einem mir unbekannten niederbayerischen "Kaff"! Die Anlegestelle liegt ca. 20 Minuten zu Fuß von der Innenstadt entfernt. Mir hatte Frau Alkofer von der Touristeninformation Kelheim geholfen, dass ich schon vorab einen Plan hatte, um die Anlegestelle zu finden. Ich wurde von ihr sehr gut auf den Anlauf in Kelheim vorbereitet. Man findet leider sehr wenig Hinweise auf Kelheims Schifffahrt Homepage für Kreuzfahrtgäste, dass ich schon dachte, dass Kreuzfahrer hier nicht willkommen sind: so wie Bar Harbor oder Venedig. Schiffsseitig wird ein Transfer in die Stadt angeboten. Aber wir laufen später. Ich habe ja meine täglichen Schritte noch nicht erreicht.



Just in time for sunrise, we dock in the Altmühl river at the pier at the bottom of the Liberation Hall's latitude, which towers over us. What a fantastic sight! In the future, I would name it in the same breath as the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. I have never heard or seen of the Liberation Hall either. We do not have an opportunity to go up here today. Kelheim does not tell me anything, either. I never heard of it — district town with its registration number: KEH despite the advanced geography course. Three letters are definitely in East Germany, or it is so insignificant that it was not enough for two letters. I had even considered doing nothing here, staying on board, and calmly packing suitcases and enjoying the sundeck. I wanted to see Burj Khalifa in Dubai, U.A.E., Petra in Jordan, and the Suez Canal this year. Instead, I am here in an unknown Lower Bavarian "dump"! The pier is about a 20-minute walk from the city center. Ms. Alkofer from the Kelheim tourist information office had helped me that I had a map in advance to find the landing stage. She prepared me very well for the approach to Kelheim. Unfortunately, there is very little evidence on Kelheim's marine homepage for cruise guests that I thought cruisers are not welcome here: Bar Harbor, ME, or Venice, Italy. A transfer to the city is offered on the ship's side. But we'll run later. I have not yet reached my daily steps.

Since the sun rises directly opposite the VISTA SKY, the captain permits me to disembark even if the general announcement has not yet been made. Everyone is still asleep. So I experience the sunrise in the background while I photograph the ship.



Da die Sonne direkt gegenüber der VISTA SKY aufgeht, genehmigt mir der Kapitän schon von Bord zu gehen, auch wenn die allgemeine Ansage noch nicht erfolgt ist. Es schlafen ja noch alle. So erlebe ich direkt den Sonnenaufgang im Hintergrund, während ich das Schiff fotografiere.

Auf zum Frühstück: Meine Kirschen aus Nürnberg und mein Schwerarbeiter-Frühstück aus einer Bergwerksstadt wie Goslar: Brötchen, Schinken, Spiegelei... Ich werde nie wieder auf Facebook ein Bild von Nürnberger Würstchen posten... Offensichtlich wird das dahingehend interpretiert, dass ich gerne jeden Morgen Nürnberger Würstchen hätte... Dann kommt ein Verzweiflungsakt: der 1. Versuch mal alle vom Restaurant auf ein Foto zu bekommen... Ich habe den Eindruck, dass es auf der OASIS OF THE SEAS einfacher gewesen wäre... heute Morgen ist es mir nicht gelungen... Einer fehlt immer: in dem Fall - die "Aushilfe" von der Bar: Heppy und Csaba. Die "letzte Aufstellung" dieses Versuches: Ni Luh Ayu, Ventislav, Anelia ("augeliehen" vom Housekeeping), Tamas, Milian, Rahmad, Eliamaro. Ich werde es heute Abend nochmals versuchen!



Off to breakfast: My cherries from Nuremberg and my hard-working breakfast from a mining town like Goslar: rolls, ham, fried eggs... I will never post a picture of Nuremberg sausages on Facebook again... This is interpreted as being me would like to have Nuremberg sausages every morning... Then comes an act of desperation: the first attempt to get a photo of everyone from the restaurant... I have the impression that it would have been easier on OASIS OF THE SEAS... This morning I fail... One of them is always missing: in that case - the "help" from the bar: Heppy and Csaba. The "last list" of this attempt: Ni Luh Ayu, Ventislav, Anelia ("borrowed" from housekeeping), Tamas, Milian, Rahmad, Eliamaro. I will try again tonight!

15:00 hrs: everyone on board... and at 14:30 hrs the disembarkation information takes place... Not so tragic either... Except for the fact that with room cards, we could get off-board without our bills first to pay... after 101 cruises, we can guess how it goes. I use the 20 minutes (with a wheelchair) into town to take photos in peace and get the first impression of Kelheim. In many places, reference is made to the recreational opportunities in the Altmühltal.



15:00 Uhr: alle Mann an Bord... und um 14:30 Uhr finden die Ausschiffungsinformationen statt... Auch nicht so tragisch... Außer der Tatsache, dass wir mit Zimmerkarten einfach von Bord verschwinden könnten, ohne vorher unsere Rechnungen zu bezahlen... Nach 101 Kreuzfahrten können wir uns denken, wie es abläuft. Die 20 Minuten (mit Rollstuhl) in die Stadt nutze ich, um in Ruhe zu fotografieren und mir einen ersten Eindruck von Kelheim zu bekommen. An vielen Stellen wird auf die Freizeitmöglichkeiten im Altmühltal hingewiesen.

Bei der Personenschiffahrt in der Donau und Altmühl habe ich Karten bestellt. Zu einem Kloster: Kloster Weltenburg. Mir sagte es bis heute gar nichts. Ich haben ja auch von UNESCO Welterbe Kloster Maulbronn auch einiges mehr erwartet. Unser Schiff, für das ich ursprünglich gebucht hatte, fährt heute nicht. Der Takt wurde verdichtet. Sicherheitshalber buche ich jedoch einen ein kleinen Aufpreis und ein Weißwurstfrühstück und schon haben wir reservierte Plätze. Allerdings: unser Tisch ist wegen Corona gesperrt. Aber Bruno und seine Eltern werden schon sehr frühzeitig ohne Tickets an Bord gelassen. Ich bin unterwegs zu einem Geldautomaten und schicke denen die Tickets als Foto. Hier treffe ich im Ort dann die Schiffsausflügler, die uns dann "hassen": sie kommen nämlich dank einer kurzen Fremdenführung als letzte an Bord: für sie ist kein Platz mehr draußen und so haben sie keine schönen Plätze mehr zu fotografieren: Entweder draußen stehen oder drinnen sitzen. Und wir haben absolute Superplätze. Wir bekommen am Tisch Getränke und unsere Weißwürste serviert. Und dabei genießen wir den Anblick der Weltenburger Enge: der Donaudurchbruch. Ich habe noch nie davon gehört und bin total überrascht. So eine schöne Flusslandschaft - und dafür bin ich bisher immer weit ins Ausland gefahren. Ohne Halt in Kelheim würde ich künftig wohl keine Flußkreuzfahrt mehr buchen. Hierher müssen wir nochmals (ok - wir müssen ja irgendwie wieder vom Kloster zurückkommen... aber danach...). Ich habe mich bislang ja immer ein wenig an den UNESCO Welterben orientiert. Es gibt aber auch die Nationalen Naturmonumente. Seit 2016. Davon gibt es derzeit 2020 sechs Stück. Seit diesem Jahr hat eben die Weltenburger Enge auch diesen Titel. Der Titel wird vom Bundesamt für Naturschutz vergeben. Ich denke mal, dass mein verändertes Interesse auch mit meiner körperlichen Veränderung zu hat: seit der letzten Reise auf der NORWEGIAN JADE 2014 (2) und heute habe ich ja nun 25 kg weniger Gewicht in Wanderschuhen und auf dem Fahrrad mitzuschleppen. Heute geht es ja nicht, aber das nächste Mal könnte ich mir vorstellen, dass wir das zu Fuß oder mit dem E-Bike machen.



I ordered tickets for passenger shipping in the rivers Danube and Altmühl. To a monastery: Weltenburg Monastery. It said nothing to me until today. I also expected a lot more from the UNESCO World Heritage Maulbronn Monastery. Our ship that I originally booked for is not sailing today. The cycle was condensed. I book a small surcharge and a veal sausage breakfast to be on the safe side, and we have reserved seats. However: our table is closed due to Corona. But Bruno and his parents are let onboard very early without tickets. I am on my way to an ATM and send them the tickets as a photo. Here I meet the boat trips in town who then "hate" us: thanks to a brief tour guide and they are the last to come on board: there is no more space outside for them, and so they no longer have any lovely places to photograph: Either stand outside or sit inside. And we have great seats. We get drinks and our veal sausages served at the table. And we enjoy the sight of the Weltenburg Gap: the Danube Breakthrough/Gorge. I have never heard of it, and I am amazed. Such a beautiful river landscape - and that is why I have always traveled far abroad. Without a stop in Kelheim, I would probably not book a river cruise in the future. We have to come here again (ok - we have to go back from the monastery somehow... but after that...). So far, I have always orientated myself a little towards the UNESCO World Heritage. But there is also the National Natural Monuments. Since 2016. There are currently six in 2020. Since this year, the Weltenburg Gap also has this title. The Federal Agency awards the title for Nature Conservation. I guess that my changed interest also has to do with my physical change: since the last trip on the NORWEGIAN JADE 2014 (2) and today, I have to carry 25 kg less weight in hiking boots and on the bike. It's not possible today, but next time I could imagine that we would do it on foot or by e-bike.

Weltenburg Monastery - an active monastery without great opportunities to visit and certainly not during Covid-19 times. I guess that you have to look at it again in the winter when it is not so crowded. I am not too fond of it right now.



Kloster Weltenburg - ein aktives Kloster ohne großen Besuchsmöglichkeiten und schon gar nicht zu Covid-19-Zeiten. Ich denke mal, dass man sich das nochmals in Ruhe im Winter angucken muss, wenn es nicht mehr so voll ist. Im Moment gefällt es mir nicht.

Von Personenschiffahrt in der Donau und Altmühl wurde mir dringendst empfohlen, dass ich einen Tisch in der Klosterschenke Weltenburg vorab bestelle. Der Tipp ist sehr gut: man darf dann an der Schlange vorbei, weil man ja schon registriert ist und sofort an einen freien Tisch geführt wird. Allerdings: der Link von der Personenschiffahrt führt zu einer alten Homepage. Ich erhalte eben nicht sofort eine Buchungsbestätigung, sondern erst mal den Hinweis, was ich alles verkehrt gemacht habe per E-Mail und dann bekam ich auch eine Buchungsbestätigung, die ich auch tatsächlich vorlegen muss. Viele Schiffsausflügler haben ihre Lunchboxen mit und anscheinend auch keine Vorreservierung. Es ist eben eine monopolistische Massenabfütterung, aber vom Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis ist es ganz ok. Morgens habe ich ja nicht geschafft Csaba zu fotografieren. Hier treffen wir einen Csaba wieder. der uns hier bedient.



I was strongly advised by Passenger Shipping in the rivers Danube and Altmühl that I order a table in the Klosterschenke Weltenburg (Monestry Tavern) in advance. The tip is perfect: you can then pass the queue because you are already registered, and you will immediately be taken to a free table. However: the link from Passenger Shipping leads to an old homepage. I do not get a booking confirmation straight away, but first of all, the information I have done wrong by email, and then I also received a booking confirmation, which I have to present. Many shore excursion participants from our ship have their lunch boxes with and no pre-reservation either. It is just a monopolistic mass feeding, but the price-performance ratio is quite ok. I did not manage to photograph Csaba in the morning. Here we meet a Csaba again. He serves us here.

An Bord hätten wir das bekommen.

Wir hatten sicherheitshalber Lunchboxen bestellt. Die haben wir an Bord gelassen. Für den Fall, dass wir zurückkommen und nichts zu essen bekommen. Einen Kabinenservice gibt es ja nicht. Und Kirschstreusel muss nicht wieder sein.



We had ordered lunch boxes to be on the safe side. We left them on board. In case we come back and do not get anything to eat. There is no cabin service. And cherry sprinkles must not have to be again.

It was a good idea that we ate in the monastery tavern. We do the same everywhere else. Only then is it the case that we can come on board and have something somewhere onboard between meals.



Es war eine gute Idee, dass wir in der Klosterschenke gegessen haben. Wir machen das ja sonst überall auch. Nur dann ist es so, dass wir an Bord kommen und irgendwo an Bord auch zwischen den Mahlzeiten etwas haben können.

Auf dem Weg zum Kloster sahen wir Kähne in der Donau. Sie fungieren offensichtlich als Fähren für Radfahrer und Wanderer. Brunos Vater sieht sie auch und bemerkt nebenbei, dass es schöner wäre damit zu fahren. Ich erinnere mich an unsere Fjordsafari-Schlauchboottour in den Norwegischen Fjorden auf unserer Reise mit der WESTERDAM 2010. Ich will auch. Mich stören die vielen anderen auf dem Schiff. Mir ist der Motor des Ausflugsschiffes zu laut. Ich habe eigentlich auch gar keine Lust den ganzen Weg zurück zum Anleger zu laufen und mich anzustellen und um einen guten Platz zu kämpfen. Es ist eine einmalige Chance. Die Kähne fungieren nicht nur als Fähren sondern fahren auch zurück nach Kelheim. Allerdings nur bei entsprechender Nachfrage. Ich chartere kurzerhand das ganze Boot für uns vier. Und so erleben wir die Weltenburger Enge mit dem Donaudurchbruch hautnah. Wir können förmlich die Nähe zur Natur spüren, fühlen, hören, erfahren, erleben, schmecken, genießen. Holger hat uns alles erklärt. In einer anderen Qualität als auf dem Ausflugsschiff. Es ist fantastisch: alles stimmt, weil auch das Wetter mitspielt. Der Weg zum Kahn in Weltenburg über die Steine ist beschwerlich. Speziell mit Rollstuhl. Brunos Vater verbittet sich beim Einstieg in den Kahn: schließlich ist er als Junge von der Mosel aufgewachsen. Das ist wohl noch so ein schöner Moment, den wir damit Brunos Vater ermöglichen können: Erinnerungen an seine Jugend.



On the way to the monastery, we saw boats in the Danube river. They act as ferries for cyclists and hikers. Bruno's father sees it too, and incidentally notes that it would be nicer to drive with it. I remember our Fjordsafari-rubber dinghy tour in the Norwegian fjords on our trip with the WESTERDAM 2010. I want to too. I am bothered by the many others on the ship. The motor of the excursion boat is too loud for me. I do not really feel like walking back to the pier and getting in line and fighting for the right spot. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The barges not only function as ferries but also drive back to Kelheim. However, only if there is sufficient demand. Without further ado, I charter the whole boat for the four of us. And so we experience the Weltenburg Gap with the Danube Breakthrough/Gorge up close. We can feel, hear, experience, experience, taste, and enjoy nature's closeness. Holger explained everything to us. In a different quality than on the excursion boat. It is fantastic: everything is right because the weather also plays along. The way to the ship in Weltenburg over the stones is difficult. Especially with a wheelchair. Bruno's father forbids himself when boarding the boat: after all, he grew up as a boy on the Moselle river. That is probably another fantastic moment that we can make possible for Bruno's father: memories of his youth.

It is back to Kelheim again. Nice little town. There is even an Asian snack bar named after me.



Nochmals geht es nach Kelheim rein. Eine nette Kleinstadt. Hier ist sogar ein Asien-Imbiss nach mir benannt.

Im Café am Donautor trinken wir noch einen Cappuccino - aus einer Barista-Maschine. Sehr schön: das Frühstücksangebot. Serviert auf Etagièren. Eine gute Idee für das Frühstück auf der VISTA SKY. Aber leider scheitert es wohl am Platz, wie ich später erfahre, um solche Etagièren zu lagern.



We have a cappuccino in the Café am Donautor (Danube Gate) - from a barista machine. Very nice: the breakfast menu. Served on tier-plates. A good idea for breakfast on the VISTA SKY. But unfortunately, as I find out later, there is probably no place to store such tier-plates.

It is a shame: unfortunately, we only pass Regensburg and leave it to the right. The cathedral is close enough to touch, but unfortunately, only the stop in the lock remains.



Sehr schade: wir fahren leider nur an Regensburg vorbei und lassen es quasi rechts liegen. Der Dom ist zum greifen nah, aber leider bleibt nur der Stop in der Schleuse.

Wir dürfen wieder auf das Sonnendeck, aber für Kapitän bedeutet das ein ständiges Auf und Ab.

Er hat jeden Gast immer freundlich gegrüßt. Er hat durch seine Art seinen Beitrag dazu geleistet, dass wir uns sehr wohl gefühlt haben. Ich kann kaum glauben, dass die Kreuzfahrt zu Ende ist. Auf jeden Fall: ein schöner Abschluss!
