Tag/Day 4.2 Post-Cruse nach der/after ARTEMIS in Calais, France

Schnell sei der noch der letzte Teil erzählt, die wie Reise zu Ende ging. Unser Zug fiel natürlich aus, weil gestern Abend noch gestreikt wurde und der Zug, der fahren soll nicht nach Calais gekommen ist. Wir sollen jetzt mit einer Ersatzverbindung nach Lille fahren.



Let me tell you the last part of our voyage. Our train was canceled because last day there was the strike and the train did not come to Calais to leave this morning. We should use now another connection to Lille.

In France, you need to validate/cancel/punch the large tickets. You need to have baggage-tags on your carry-on bags. That is the reason why you have baggage-tags here to take with you.



In Frankreich müssen die großen Tickets noch entwertet werden. Gepäckstücke müssen gekennzeichnet werden. Daher werden die Gepäckanhänger ausgelegt.

Es gehen sogar direkte TGV-Züge nach Paris, aber erst mittags.



There are direct Paris-bound TGV trains but around noon-time.

We should go first with the regional train to Calais-Frethun and change there the train.



Wir sollen zunächst einmal mit einem Regionalzug nach Calais-Frethun fahren und dort umsteigen.

Dieses Mal kommt der Zug.



This time the train came.

If it is as calm as here, it will become a nice ride.



Wenn es so schön leer bleibt, dann kann es eine nette Fahrt werden.

Schon sind wir in Calais-Frethun.



Then we approched Calais-Frethun.

There we continued on a TGV train to Lille, but officially it's a regional train and very crowds so many had to stand. We were lucky as this trains continued to Paris after a short break in Lille Europe.



Dort geht es nach Lille mit einem TGV weiter, der allerdings nur als Regionalzug geführt wird und auch ziemlich voll ist, so dass viele stehen. Wir haben Glück: dieser Zug wird ab Lille Europe nach Paris Nord weitergeführt.

Wir lassen alle anderen erst mal hinsetzen und nehmen zwei leere Plätze ein. Der Schaffner kann uns erst in Paris Nord rauswerfen. Ihm erklären wir, dass unser erster Zug nach Lille-Flandres ausgefallen ist und uns die Fahrkartenausgabe in Calais-Ville erklärt hat, dass wir diesen Zug nehmen sollen. Der Schaffner ist nett und akzeptiert das.



We let all others taking their seats before we occupied two seats. The conductor can get us out in Paris Nord as this was the first stop. We explained to him that our first train to Lille-Flandres was canceled and the ticket counter in Calais-Ville told us to take this train. The conductor was nice and accepted it.

We arrived two hours earlier in Paris Gare du Nord (North Station) as scheduled. So we could try to catch a connecting train two hours ahead of schedule. But the train should leave from Gare de l'Est (East Station).



In Paris Gare du Nord (Nordbahnhof) kommen wir daher zwei Stunden früher als geplant an. Damit könnten wir auch zwei Stunden früher weiterfahren. Nur geht unser Zug vom Gare de l'Est (Ostbahnhof) ab.

Keine Hinweise zum Ostbahnhof.

Worked also for stupid people. The only corner where you needed to make a turn you find all signposted.



Ist auch für Blöde geeignet. An der einzigen Ecke, an der man abbiegen muss ist alles ausgeschildert.

Von dieser Ecke ist es noch so weit bis zum Nordbahnhof zurück. Hier gehen mir die Batterien aus, so dass ich nun mit dem iPhone weiter fotografieren muss. Ich vergesse jedoch, dass iPhone alles im Hochformat aufnimmt.



From this corner you can see the distance to the North Station. But my batteries for my camera went down, so I need to use my iPhone to take pictures. But I forgot that iPhone takes all pictures in letter format.

An iPhone has no zoom. Otherwise, you could see the street sign "Rue d'Alsace" and "Gare de l'Est".



Ein iPhone hat leider keinen Zoom. Sonst würde man das Straßenschild von "Rue d'Alsace" und "Gare de l'Est" sehen.

So weit ist es noch von der selben Straßenkreuzung bis zum Ostbahnhof. Irgendwie liegt das Gebäude aber ziemlich tief.

Indeed all tracks were low to us.



In der Tat sind alle Gleise unter uns.

Und wir müssen noch die Treppen mit Gepäck herunter. So toll ist der Weg also nicht.



And we need to go the stairs with all bags. The way was not so great.

And here is the way from East to North Station.



Und hier ginge es raus, wenn man vom Ostbahnhof zum Nordbahnhof muss.

Zwei Stunden vor unserem gebuchten Zug fährt ein TGV nach Metz ab. Alle ICE-Züge nach Frankfurt und TGV-Züge nach Karlsruhe sind auf Tage ausgebucht. Aber da wir "Loisir" gewählt haben, dürfen wir die Karte nicht umtauschen.



Two hours ahead of our booked trains there was another TGV train towards Metz. All Frankfurt-bound ICE InterCityExpress German High-Speed-Trains and Karlsruhe-bound TGV-trains were fully booked for the next days. As we booked "Loisir" we were allowed to change the tickets.

We spoke with the conductor who allocated two seats to us which occurred the payment of 30 EUR (for 2) reservation change fee because we were on the wrong train.



Wir sprechen mit dem Zugchef, der uns zwei Plätze zuweist, die allerdings 30 EUR (für 2) an Umbuchungsgebühren kosten, weil wir im falschen Zug sitzen.

In Metz ist die Fahrt zu Ende. Sie dauerte nur 1.20 Stunde von Paris aus. Eigentlich ging es jetzt schnell. Um 08.00 Uhr sind wir in Calais losgefahren und um 12.50 Uhr waren wir bereits in Metz. Schneller und billiger hätten wir es mit einem Auto auch nicht geschafft. Hier holen uns Brunos Eltern ab, die im Saarland wohnen und bringen uns bis Saarbrücken. Von hier fahren direkte RegionalExpress-Züge zum Flughafen Frankfurt, der langsam seinen Betrieb wieder aufnimmt.



In Metz our train terminated. It was only 1.20 hours from Paris. Quite fast. At 08.00 hrs we started from Calais and arrived 12.50 hrs already in Metz. We could not make it faster or cheaper with a car. Bruno's parents met us there who lived close by in Germany and took us to the first German city of Saarbrücken. From here we took a regional train to Frankfurt Airport which resumed the service by and by.

We arrived there around 17.20 hrs in Frankfurt. For an additional day, we need to pay 5 EUR extra in the parking. I need to return back immediately to my office place. My car was in Hildesheim in Northern Germany. But this was close to Hanover and as there was no flight and it was Hanover trade fair all trains were full. When I arrived in Hildesheim the office of the parking was closed, but it was good that I arranged the exit ticket before I left which was valid to the day before. The next day I called the operator of the parking company was very nice. After I explained the situation they felt sorry for me did not want me to pay the additional day.

In total the short journey was charming on ARTEMIS and getting to and from the ship was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. We wrote Lufthansa, P&O, German Railways and Windsor Castle for some refund requests. Let's see how they will react. We will keep an eye on ARCADIA and ADONIA when we will go with P&O again. I am curious on reports from the ARTANIA when ARTEMIS will be transferred to Phoenix next year. And I genuinely hope that the guests of ARTANIA will like the ship the same way as we did. I guess it was the most expensive 1-nighter we ever made in our lifetime.



Gegen 17.20 Uhr kommen wir in Frankfurt an. Wir müssen für 5 EUR einen Tag im Parkhaus in Frankfurt nachlösen. Ich fahre direkt weiter in den Harz. Mein Auto steht in Hildesheim. Nur es ist Hannover-Messe und kein Flieger. Deswegen ist der letzte ICE wieder ziemlich voll. Als ich in Hildesheim ankomme, ist das Parkhaus geschlossen. Zum Glück hatte ich mir schon ein Ausfahrtticket schon besorgt, das aber auch nur bis zum Vortag gab. Der Anruf bei den Hildesheimer Parkhausbetrieben war dann erfreulich. Nach dem ich die Situation erläutert hatte, wie es zu der verspäteten Wagenabholung kam, war man verständnisvoll und verzichtete auf eine Nachbelastung für einen Tag.

Insgesamt war es schon sehr schön auf der ARTEMIS und An- und Abreise ein Abenteuer für das Leben. Wir haben jetzt Lufthansa, Deutsche Bahn, Windsor Castle und P&O Cruises geschrieben. Mal gucken was rauskommt. Auf jeden Fall werden wir mal die ARCADIA und ADONIA im Auge behalten, um mal wieder mit P&O wegzukommen. Auf die Berichte von der ADONIA bin ich sehr gespannt. Und ich wünsche denen, dass denen das Schiff genauso gut gefällt wie es uns gefallen hat. Für uns war es vermutlich die teuerste 1-Nacht-Kreuzfahrt, die wir gemacht haben.
