Seetag/Day on Sea 4 auf der/on BOUDICCA

Nach dem langen Tag in Bergen, tut uns vermutlich ein Seetag irgendwie gut.

Das Frühstück bringt keine neuen Erkenntnisse. So bleibe ich bei Omelette.



After the long day in Bergen a day on sea can be very relaxing.

The breakfast did not bring new inspirations. So I stayed with my omelette.

Oscar was somehow afraid to see us as it did not work with the other table. But we told him: when we return next time he is the Maître D' and then it will work. He was happy that we said it.



Oscar hat sich in den letzten Tag kaum noch unter unsere Augen getraut, nach dem es mit dem Tisch nicht geklappt hat. Aber wir haben ihm nur gesagt: wenn wir das nächste Mal kommen, dass ist er bestimmt Maître D' und dann klappt es sicherlich. Darüber freut er sich.

Wir genießen den Ausblick aus "The Observatory". Leider gibt es keinen Kaffee. Auch nicht zu kaufen. Es gibt immer zwischendurch kostenlos Kaffee und Tee, so wie bei Tagungen und Seminaren. Aber den wollen wir gar nicht, sondern wir wollen ja gerne für einen guten Cappucino zahlen. Da keine Bar etwas verkauft, geben wir auf.



We enjoyed the view from "The Observatory". Unfortunately there was no coffee available - neiter for sale. You get during the whole day free coffee and tea like on seminars or conventions. But we did not want this but a paid great cappucino. As no bar was selling something we gave up.

Now you see the disadvantage of the ship's size: they played Boule in the stairways. I did not know if I liked it or not to cross their playground to get to my stateroom.



Nun merkt man doch die "fehlende" Größe. Boule wird kurzerhand im Treppenhaus gespielt. Ich weiss nicht, ob ich es gut oder komisch finden soll, zumal ich nicht in meine Kabine komme, ohne über das Spielfeld rennen zu müssen.

Uns fällt ein, dass wir noch für unseren London-Flug einchecken müssen. Das dauert so langsam, dass wir bis zum Sitzplatzauswahl fast umgerechnet 5 EUR zahlen. Hoffentlich ist bald der Umbau des Internetcenters und die Systemverbesserung bald durch.



We remember that we need to check-in for our London-flight. It was so slow that we had to pay so much until the seat selection worked. I truly hope that the construction works and the upgrading will be finished soon.

I found it disburbing to have children's entertainment in the lounge. Especially if there were kids who were not integrated and so you can listen to the discussion between the kids, the parents and the nanny.



Auch nachmittags ist es schon nervig, wenn gleichzeitig in Lounge das Kinderunterhaltungsprogramm angeboten wird. Zumal es dann nervt, wenn Kinder, die gerne noch dazustoßen wollen, abweist und so man den ganzen Trouble zwischen Eltern, Kindern und der Betreuerin mitbekommt.

Wir gehen ins "Culinary Arts Center" - ach nein, so heisst es bei Holland America.

Kurzerhand wird die Neptune Lounge zum Küchenstudio umfunktioniert. Selbstverständlich legt der Cruise Director noch selbst Hand an.

We went to the "Cullinary Arts Center" - No - this is Holland America Line...

In few minutes they changed the venue to a cooking studio. It was normal that the cruise director gave his support.

The Executive Chef invited for a cooking show.

Der Executive Chef lädt zu einer Kochvorführung ein.

Die Spiegel, die oben installiert wurden, sind genial. Kennt man eigentlich sonst nur aus einem anderen Einsatz her... (Honi soit qui mal y pense - verdammt sei der, der arges denkt...)

The installation of the mirrors was genious. Normally you know the construction only from somewhere else... (Honi soit qui mal y pense... )

Due to missing air absorbtion it smelled great in the lounge and you become hungry.

Mangels Dunstabzugshaube riecht es in der Lounge ganz lecker und man bekommt Hunger.

Ohne Assistenten hätte er es wohl nicht gepackt. Das war schon klasse, wie sie sich alles zugespielt haben.

Without assistent it would have been very hard for him. It was great to see how they worked together.

I thought that he had stolen the gloves at BP in Germany but there is a simple explaination: there are no natural blue food. If you cut a piece of the glove by mistake you can identify it very easily between the food.

Ich dachte, dass die blauen Handschuhe bei ARAL als Dieselhandschuhe geklaut wurden, aber die Erläuterung ist ganz einfach: es gibt kaum natürliche blaue Lebensmittel. Wenn also ein Stück vom Handschuh abgeschnitten wurde, findet man es sofort in den Lebensmitteln wieder.

Hier macht er eine Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte - allerdings nicht mit Kirschwasser, weil es ihn an Bord nicht gibt. Das nächste Mal bringe ich ihm eine Flasche mit.

Here he was doing a Black Forrest Gateau - but not with Cherry Spirit because it was unavailable on board. Next time I will get him some.

You can see everything in the rear of the lounge because the show was broadcasted via screens.

Sehr gut sind die Übertragungen über die Bildschirme, so dass man auch hinten alles mitbekommt.

Und weil sich kein Freiwilliger findet, muss die "Lady Hostess" (korrekt: Dance Instructor) herhalten und schneiden. Den anderen war es wohl zu gefährlich.

Because there was no volunteer, the "Lady Hostess" (corretly: Dance Instructor vs. "Genetleman Host") need to show up and cut. All others thought it might be too dangerous.

A part of the guests left the venue before the show ended and the 2nd seating started... This was a microwave day... The chef was with us...

Ein Teil der Gäste verschwindet langsam, bevor die Kochshow zu Ende ist und die 2. Tischzeit beginnt... Gibt es heute alles aus der Mikrowelle... Der Koch ist doch hier...

Es wird alles zum Probieren aufgeteilt. Es wird nie für alle reichen. Aber ein paar sind trotzdem der Meinung, dass sie das gesamte Menü aus Suppe, Hauptgericht und Kuchen ausprobieren müssten. Auch wenn dadurch ein paar leer ausgehen werden.

They prepared everything to test. It would not be enough for everybody. But some were thinking that they need to test the complete menu. Even some might would not get anything.

We shared few words and told him how good his bread was.

Wir haben uns noch ein wenig ausgetauscht und sein Brot sehr gelobt.

Dann geht es auch für uns zum Mittagessen. Wir gehen zu unserem regulären Tisch in der 2. Tischzeit.



Then it was time for lunch. We went to our regular table in the 2nd seating

.The soups are all thickened with corn flour to offer gluten-free food. I like it because it tastes like hospital in childhood and I had great memories from the hospital.



Die Suppen sind alle mit Maismehl gebunden, um auch glutenfreie Kost anbieten zu können. Ich mag sie, weil sie mich immer noch an das Krankenhausessen in der Kindheit erinnern, die ich in sehr guter Erinnerung habe.

Heute gehen wir nicht zum Büffet und bestellen von der Karte. Als das Essen ca. 25 Minuten nach Beginn der Tischzeit serviert wird, tauchen auch unsere Tischnachbarn auf. Sie sind schockiert uns zu sehen. Immerhin gibt es ein "High there".



We did not went to the buffet and ordered from the menu. 25 minutes after the first seating started and our main course was served our table-mates appeared. They were shocked to see us. But we got a "High there".

You could see that the Executive Chef was not not available in the galley during the cooking show... It was too British...



Man merkt doch, dass der Executive Chef in der Kochshow war. Das war uns alles zu britisch...

So gehen wir doch zum Büffet und essen noch ein wenig Lamm-Curry und Hühnchen, was wiederum lecker ist.



So we went again to the buffet and got some lamb-curry and some chicken which was nice.

Lemon-Sorbet or Melon-Sorbet. I never had any thoughts that the order of 1st and the 3rd letter will decide to be happy or unhappy. I understood melon and got lemon... since my MSC FANTASIA cruise I hated lemon-sorbet since I got it on four consequetive days.



Lemon-Sorbet oder Melon-Sorbet. Noch nie habe ich mir darüber gedanken gemacht. Aber die Position des 1. und 3. Buchstabens entscheidet über Glück und Unglück. Ich hatte Melon vestanden und bekam Lemon... was ich ja seit der MSC FANTASIA verschmähe (nachdem es das viermal hintereinander gab).

Nachmittags ist einfach mal ein wenig Ruhe angesagt. Ich hatte um ein Gespräch mit der Hotel Directorin Lindsey gebeten, weil mich doch ein paar Punkte stören, bei denen ich gerne rausbekommen möchte, ob es etwas Generelles oder etwas Einmaliges ist.

Sie erkennt mich als Besucher von Travemünde wieder und erzählt mir, dass Jan Thommessen im Herbst wieder zurück sei. Und von der Ausfahrt von drei Fred Olsen Schiffen in Bergen und die BLACK PRINCE durfte sie anführen. Kapitän Thommessen hat Trompete auf der Brücke gespielt. Davon bekomme ich eine Gänsehaut.



In the afternoon I had my nap. I asked for a meeting with Hotel Director Lindsey because some items I found them disturbing and I should know if this is general issue or just a single issue.

She remember me as visitor in Travemünde and told me that Captain Jan Thommessen should be back in fall. And she told me about the sailing of the three Fred Olsen ships from Bergen and BLACK PRINCE had the honor of leading the others while Captain Thommessen was playing his trumpet on the bridge. That gave me the creeps.

Around 18.00 hrs we were asked to clear the balconies for cleaning reasons. Now we know: the doors between the balconies are no connecting doors...



Gegen 18.00 Uhr wurden wir gebeten den Balkon zu räumen, da er saubergemacht wurde. Nun wissen wir endlich, wozu die Türen zwischen den Balkonen dienen. Nein, dass ist keine Verbindungstür...

Und wie üblich wird zum letzten Mal wieder mit leckerer Schokolade, die man nicht wegwerfen muss, unsere Betten hergerichtet.



A very last time our beds were prepared with nice chocolate you must not dispose.

So went to the self-service restaurant and we were very curious if the talk with Lindsey was helpful.

We were allocated to the same table like two days ago but it was prepared for six instead four persons. It was again that something was missing on the table. Our table-mates were two ladies who dislike the main restaurant and were novices on cruising.

I asked Lindsey how it works with tipping as you do not have a fixed waiter. That's why we prefer to have the auto-gratuities on the account. Lindsey explained that the company covers their gratuities and that each waiter need to rotate to the self-service area. This might explain the missing motivation. I. e. everyone who dislike to tip can eat here.

The soup was fine. I am missing a bowl with herbs or croutons to upgrade the soup.



Wir gehen wieder ins SB-Restaurant und ich mal gespannt, ob das Gespräch mit Lindsey gefruchtet hat.

Uns wird der gleiche Tisch wie vorgestern zugeteilt. Nur dass er heute für sechs Personen statt für vier gedeckt ist oder besser teilweise gedeckt ist. Irgendwas fehlt immer. Unsere Tischbarn sind zwei Damen, die keine Lust haben im Hauptrestaurant zu essen. Sie sind das erste Mal auf Kreuzfahrt.

U. a. haben wir uns bei Lindsey erkundigt, wie es mit den Trinkgeldern im SB-Restaurant läuft, da wir ja keinen festen Kellner haben. Deswegen finden wir das System mit der automatischen Abbuchung in so einem Fall sehr gut. Lindsey erklärt uns, dass das von der Firma übernommen wird und dass jeder Kellner in Rotation dort arbeiten muss. Das erklärt die Lustlosigkeit ein wenig. D. h. das jeder der keine Lust hat, Trinkgeld zu geben, einfach hier essen kann.

Die Suppe ist wieder ganz in Ordnung. Was ich immer vermisse: ein Schälchen mit Kräutern oder Croutons o. ä. zum Aufpeppen...

Die kalten Sachen sind gut wie eh und jeh.



The cold dishes were again very good.

There was a "splash" just six feet next to me. Who was in charge to fill up the soup did not hit the soup pot. One part of the soup crossed the "fenced wall". I was lucky: nothing on me. I was expecting that some would come and ask if nothing happened but none came.



Auf einmal macht es Splatsch etwa zwei Meter links neben mir. Derjenige der die Suppe auffüllt, trifft den Suppentopf nicht richtig. Ein Teil der Suppe geht hinten raus. Ich habe zum Glück nichts abbekommen. Zumindest hätte ich aber damit gerechnet, dass jemand zumindest mal nachfragt, ob wir etwas abbekommen haben.

Der Executive Chef meint, dass man besser nachwürzt als überwürzt. Das galt aber nicht für das Chilli con Carne. Damit sollte wohl die Verjüngung der Gästestruktur bei Fred Olsen vorangetrieben werden. Ein Teil der magenempfindlichen Kunden dürfte diesen Angriff nicht schadlos überstanden haben.



The Executive Chef said that it is better to season the food at the table then releasing it over-seasoned. But this did not work for the Chili con Carne. I think Fred Olsen wanted to force the renewal of the guest-generations on board. One part of the stomach-sensitive guests may not survived this attack without serious injuries.

Somehow I was disappointed. I know myself and I am playing with the silverware on the table if I am waiting for the next course. Sometimes you see someone doing manicure or anything else etc. etc. That's why I appreciate if they clear all silverware. What they are doing at the service station: as long as I do not see it: I do not care. Our table-mates left already and they start to refill their seats and putting us under the pressure that we should rush up. I was really waiting that they placed new guests while we had our dessert. No coffee was offered but anyhow we preferred to buy our coffee of our own. I did not like this conception: too nice for a company's canteen. Other have the Hobson's Choice but we choosed both options.



Insgesamt fand ich das ganze enttäuschend. Ich kenne mich und spiele mal gelegentlich mit dem Besteck, was auf dem Tisch liegt, wenn ich auf dem nächsten Gang warte. Ab und zu beobachtet man ja auch, dass sich manche dann die Chance nutzen sich zu maniküren, irgendetwas zu manipulieren usw. usw.. Deswegen schätze ich es sehr, wenn also das gesamte Besteck ausgetauscht wird. Was die damit an der Servicestation machen, ist mir egal, solange ich es nicht mitbekomme. Aber da unsere Tischnachbarn schon weg sind, wird einfach während wir noch essen alles aufgefüllt und neu eingedeckt, um zu signalisieren, dass wir schnell weiteressen sollen. Hätte bloß noch gefehlt, dass sie weitere Gäste an den Tisch platziert hätten, während wir den Nachtisch essen. Auf den Kaffee, der uns nicht angeboten wurde, haben wir verzichtet und lieber wieder selbst gekauft. Irgendwie stimmt das Konzept für mich nicht: zu schön eigentlich für eine Werkskantine. Andere können zwischen Pest und Cholera wählen. Wir hatten jedoch beides.

Die Idee zur Show für 1. Tischzeit zu gehen war verrückt. Da die meisten dort schon sind, bekommen nur Plätze sehr weit hinten, obwohl wir bereits mehr als 30 Minuten da sind.

Z. Z. läuft aber noch die Veranstaltung davor.



It was crazy to join the show for the 1st seating. Most of the guests were already in so we got only seats far away in the rear although still 30 minutes to go.

Currently it was still the event ahead.

Ich muss sagen, dass ich viele Stücke, die heute Abend gespielt werden, nicht kenne und daher auch nicht soviel damit anfangen kann. Trotzdem hätte ich die Show nicht missen wollen. Was die mit sieben Leuten auf die Beine stellen, ist fantastisch.



I need to say: many of the tonight's song I did not know them. But anyhow I would not like to miss the show. What they did with seven entertainers: brilliant!!!

So the end of the show was in Las Vegas...

We were also near the end: as we have to pack and get off very early we went early to bed.
