Tag/Day 2.2 auf der/on BRITANNIA in Le Havre, France statt/instead of Zeebrugge, Belgium

Bienvenue au Havre. Ein Ort, an dem ich heute gar nicht sein möchte. 400 km von Zeebrugge entfernt. Dort hätte heute meine große Feier stattfinden sollen. Wir konnten es meiner Familie nicht zumuten, dass wir uns nochmals 200 km weiter in der Mitte in Calais/Dünkirchen treffen.



Bienvenue au Havre. A place, I did not like to be. 250 miles away from Zeebrugge, Belgium. There my big party should be set up. We could not ask my families to meet in the center 125 miles around Calais/Dunkirk, France.

First, we went for breakfast in the Peninsular restaurant. Actually, they had everything on the menu. They had daily changing specialties. The toast was slammed on the table in the rack. They did not ask before which kind of bread you would like to have. You had only fruit salad. The smoothie tasted to unhealthy (i.e., too sweet). No chance to get a second cup of tea. Part of the Chinese tradition was to have some noodle soup for breakfast. As long as possible for long life. You could feel that the crew was Indians dominated. So they had no noodle tradition. They wished me a short life. I did not take it personally but thought that I was not welcome with P&O and wanted to have me as quickly as possible off the ship. So we shared the wish. Maybe we should better leave the ship and take the TGV and Thalys High-Speed Trains back to Germany and should dine better ashore.



Zunächst geht es zum Frühstück ins Peninsular Restaurant. Eigentlich alles auf der Karte. Es gibt täglich wechselnde Spezialitäten. Toast wird im Ständer auf den Tisch geknallt. Es wird nicht gefragt, welches Brot man möchte. Es gibt nur Obstsalat. Der Smoothie schmeckt mir zu ungesund (sprich viel zu süß). Eine Chance eine 2. Tasse Tee zu bekommen, besteht nicht. Zur chinesichen Tradition gehört Nudelsuppe zum Frühstück. Möglichst lange als Symbol für ein möglichst langes Leben. Man merkt allerdings, dass das Schiff crewseitig her indisch dominiert ist. Daher keine Nudeltradition. Mir wünscht man ein kurzes Leben. Ich nehme es mal nicht persönlich, sondern gehe davon aus, dass ich an Bord von P&O unerwünscht bin und man meine Zeit an Bord möglichst kurz halten möchte. In sofern teilen wir den Wunsch. Vielleicht sollte ich besser von Bord gehen und von Le Havre mit dem TGV und Thalys nach Deutschland zurückfahren und lieber abends an Land essen.

Am Kai entstehen ein paar Aufnahmen von der BRITANNIA. So wie ein britisches Schlachtschiff oder besonders national wirkt es nicht. Ist auch nur Farbe.

At the cruise terminal, you could feel that we called spontaneously. Many of the shops were closed because they could not offer the full selection at short-notice. For 25.00 EUR pp (2016) you could get in a collective taxi to Honfleur, France.



Am Kreuzfahrtterminal selbst merkt man, dass der Anlauf zu spontan gekommen ist. Viele Läden sind geschlossen, weil man wohl so kurzfristig nicht das normale Angebot im Kreuzfahrtterminal anbieten kann. Für 25,00 EUR (2016) pro Person kommt man im Sammeltaxi nach Honfleur.

Wir laufen ein wenig durch Le Havre. Wir waren ja schon öfters hier. Die großen Autovermietungen sind immer noch da, wo sie vorher schon immer waren. Und für den tollen Fischmarkt kommen wir schon zu spät. Es gibt nur noch ein paar Jakobsmuscheln.



We walked a little trough Le Havre, France. We went here a few times before. The big players of the car rental companies were still at the familiar locations. For the wonderful fish market, we came too late. Only a few scallops were left.

We made a break in Café Crêpe. Lovely selection.

Bruno ist nicht so begeistert vom Kaffee. Aber das weiß man ja eigentlich seit "La Cage aux Folles", dass die Franzosen keinen Kaffee kochen können und selbst bei Air France gibt es bloß Nescafé.



Bruno was not very excited because of the coffee. But you knew from "La Cage aux Folles" ("The Bird Cage") that French could not prepare any coffee, and even with Air France, you could only get instant coffee.

Somehow I thought that the flamed crêpe (they did not know the expression Crêpe Suzette) was to thick. I knew them much thinner. It was too much for me.



Irgendwie ist mir der flambierte Crêpe (den Begriff Crêpe Suzette kennt keiner) ein wenig zu dick geraten. Ich kenne sie sehr viel dünner. Mir war es zuviel.

So verbringen wir meinen Geburtstag hier, statt in Blankenberge bei tollen Meeresfrüchten.



So we spent here my birthday but in Blankenberge, Belgium with great sea food.

We decided to walk back. We passed the ferry terminal to find a change office, but there was nothing either.



Wir beschließen zu Fuß zurückzugehen. Wir kommen am Fährterminal vorbei auf der Suche nach einer Wechselstube, aber hier gibt es auch nichts.

Es liegt auf dem halben Weg zwischen dem Kreuzfahrtterminal und dem Bahnhof.



It was on the half way between the cruise terminal and the railway station.

From here you had a direct bus to the train station.



Von hier fährt ein Bus direkt zum Bahnhof.

Vielleicht nicht so ganz uninteressant, wenn man mit der Bahn nach Paris oder Rouen möchte.



Maybe it would not be uninteresting for those who wanted to see Paris or Rouen by train.

We were heading back for lunch onboard. They denied to give me a bigger table: I could share or having a tiny table. Somehow I could not deal with the bound soups with the Britons. So I was happy to have a Shepherd's Pie. With Bruno's Curry, I actually had the memories that they later offered with chutney and other extra sauces. But they did have it anymore. We did not want a coffee here.



Es geht zurück an Bord zum Mittagessen. Meine erneute Anfrage, nach einem größeren Tisch wird wieder abgelehnt: entweder teilen oder kleinen Tisch. Irgendwie kann ich bei den Briten mit gebundenen Suppen nichts anfangen. Dafür freue ich mich über das Shepherd's Pie. Bei Brunos Curry habe ich eigentlich in Erinnerung, dass sie später mit den typischen Chutneys und anderen Saucen extra noch kamen. Aber das gibt es nicht mehr. Auf einen Kaffee hier verzichten wir.

Wir gehen lieber an die Kaffeebar. Man wird normalerweise am Tisch bedient, falls die Kellner nicht immer vorbeilaufen.



We preferred to see the coffee bar. You normally would be served at the table, subject the waiters would not pass by all the time.

Here you had some small goodies for free on top of your coffee.

Bruno schmeckt es hier und ich freue mich über mein Kaffeekaltgetränk.



Bruno liked it here, and I was happy with my cold coffee drink.

Raphael was the first waiter who was addressing me by name, and I liked it. The first time, I felt finally somehow welcome like I felt with other cruise lines as Mr. Tien or Mr. Yao and not just as Sir.



Raphael ist der erste Kellner, der mich namentlich anspricht, worüber ich mich sehr freue. Ich fühle mich endlich irgendwie doch willkommen, weil ich es so von den anderen Gesellschaften her gewohnt bin, dass ich nur selten Sir, sondern Mr. Tien oder Mr. Yao bin.

Wir gehen etwas einkaufen. Ich gönne mir ein T-Shirt von P&O.



We went shopping. I treated myself with a P&O-T-Shirt.

Es steht ja erst seit vier Tagen fest, dass ich meinen Geburtstag anders gestalten muss, als geplant. Das war schon mal passiert. Als Nha Trang nicht angelaufen wurde, damals auf der ZAANDAM 2012, hatte man sofort an Bord alles gemacht, um mich glücklich zu machen. Der Pinnacle Grill war ausgebucht. Damals hieß es: "Er ist zwar ausgebucht, aber wir werden alles tun, um Ihnen einen schönen Geburtstag zu bereiten und selbstverständlich bekommen Sie einen Tisch bei uns!". Aber nicht so an Bord der BRITANNIA. Ich hatte nachgefragt, ob wir einen Tisch für die bezahlte Tea-Time haben könnten. Es hieß "Nein". Alles ausgebucht. Ich hatte meine Situation geschildert. "Nein - wir können nichts für Sie tun". Ich frage nach, ob es einen Supervisor gibt. Aber sie wäre jetzt in ihrer Pause und ich sie erst sprechen, wenn die Tea-Time beginnt. Ich frage an der Rezeption nach: "Nein". Ich frage nach, ob ich den F&B-Manger sprechen dürfte: "Nein". Und als ich nach dem Hoteldirektor frage, wird mir mitgeteilt, dass ich das Protokoll einhalten müsste. Ich wollte ja nicht die Queen sprechen. Also gehe ich zu Beginn der Tea-Time hin und einigem Hin und Her wird mir noch ein Tisch zugesagt. Der Service ist toll. Das Ambiente ist toll. Nur für 20,00 GBP pro Person hat mich das kullinarische Angebot sehr enttäuscht. Das soll ein Star-Patisseur hergestellt haben? Da kenne ich aber in Frankreich sehr viel bessere Patisserien.



For four days we knew that I needed to set up my birthday actually differently than originally planned. It happened before one time. When we could not call Nha Trang, Vietnam, then on ZAANDAM 2012, they did everything onboard to make me happy. The Pinnacle Grill was sold out. Then they said: "It was sold out, but we would do everything that you would have an unforgettable birthday and certainly, you will get a table for us!". But not onboard of BRITANNIA. I asked to get a table at the paid tea-time. They only said "no". Everything was booked. I explained the situation. "No - there is nothing we can do for your". I asked to speak with a supervisor. But she would be now in her break, and you could speak with her once the tea-time started. I asked with the front desk: "No". I asked if it would be possible to speak with the F&B Manager: "No". When I asked for the hotel director, I was told that I had to follow the protocol. I did not want to talk with the Queen. So I went there when the tea-time started, and after some hick hack, they allocated a table to me. The service was wonderful. The ambiance was beautiful. But for 20.00 GBP per person, I was very disappointed with the food they offered. It was created by a celebrity pastry chef? But I knew many better cake shops in France.

Now it would be the right moment to introduce the travel agent I booked. Since we had no more contacts with British travel agents and the price for this cruise in Germany and in the UK were not very different after we compared. P&O was sold in Germany by InterConnect Marketing. So we could choose a German travel agent to do all the administration. I selected Sonnendeck Seereisen. You might better know the owners Raoul Fiebig and Jens Walpert from the German forum Kreuzfahrten-Treff-Forum. It was unusual for us to have so much paper since we used for many years eDocs. At this time I need to thank for the great booking administration but also for the nice surprise for my birthday. All Tien-Canapés. Thanks again.



Nun wird es Zeit mal unser Reisebüro vorzustellen. Da wir keine Kontakte mehr zu Reisebüros in Großbritannien haben, habe ich die Preise für diese Kreuzfahrt zwischen Deutschland und Großbritannien verglichen und keinen signifikanten Unterschied festgestellt. P&O wird in Deutschland über InterConnect Marketing vertrieben. Bei der Buchung konnte man ein deutsches Reisebüro für die Abwicklung auswählen. Ich hatte mich für Sonnendeck Seereisen entschieden. Man kennt vermutlich die Eigentümer besser als Raoul Fiebig und Jens Walpert aus dem Kreuzfahrten-Treff-Forum. Für mich war die papierintensive Abwicklung etwas ungewohnt, da ich seit Jahren nur noch eDocs nutze. Ich möchte mich an dieser Stelle nicht nur für die tolle Buchungsabwicklung bedanken, sondern auch noch für die Überraschung zu meinem Geburtstag. Alles Tien-Canapés. Vielen Dank nochmals.

Es ist formeller Abend. Irgendwie konnte ich mich noch nicht dazu durchringen, einen neuen Smoking zu kaufen.

Nochmals bitte ich um einen Tisch, der nicht so eng ist. Ich habe ja noch die Torte bestellt. Aber wieder nein: es gibt nur wieder den engen Tisch.



Again I asked for a table which was not so tiny. I ordered a cake. But again no: only a little tiny one.

I felt like attending a kids' birthday party with McDonald's.



Ich komme mir vor, wie beim Kindergeburtstag bei McDonald's.

Das nächste Mal zahle ich garantiert die 6,00 GBP für das Geburtstags-Treatment nicht mehr. Bei anderen Gesellschaften übrigens meistens kostenlos.



The next time I would not spend anymore 6,00 GBP for the birthday treatment. Most cruise lines offered this complimentary.

Somehow I felt entirely wrong to be here.



Irgendwie komme ich mir fehl am Platz vor.

Das Gala-Essen kannte ich bereits vom Vortag. Man hatte mir bereits eine heutige Speisekarte für die Hauptrestaurants ausgehändigt, damit ich weiß, was mich heute erwartet und ggfls. ein Zuzahlrestaurant buchen könnte. Aber die Auswahl war ganz in Ordnung. Der Kuchen ist extrem süß und irgendwie auch staubtrocken, so dass ich gerne von einem Lungenfacharzt in das Bochumer Bergmannsheil eingewiesen werden wollte. Hier sind sie auf Staublungen spezialisiert.



The gala-dinner I knew already from the day before. I could already have a sneak view of what I should expect that day and had the option to book an alternative dining venue eventually. But the selection was fine. The cake was extremely sweet, and somehow it was too dry that I would need to see a hospital which was specialized for the treatment of pneumoconiosis of coal miners.

I got some birthday greetings from Goslar, Germany. I was delighted to get them.



Aus Goslar kam auch ein Geburtstagsgruß. Hierüber habe ich mich sehr gefreut.

Und mit dem richtigen Motiv für mich.
