Tag/Day 2.1 auf der/on BRITANNIA in Le Havre, France statt/instead of Zeebrugge, Belgium

Alles war ganz anders geplant. Ein Tisch für 13 Personen war im De Oesterput in Blankenberge bestellt. Während des Landganges wären unsere Familien aus dem Rheinland, aus der Grafschaft Lippe und aus dem Sarland gekommen. Für das Mittagessen hätten wir uns hier getroffen. Das Reisebüro (mehr dazu später) hat sich extra für uns nach den exakten Liegezeiten erkundigt, weil normalerweise P&O sie nicht veröffentlicht, damit die Leute keine privaten Ausflüge arrangieren können. Ich hatte auch versucht anzufragen, ob meine Gäste mittags an Bord essen dürfen, wenn ich bezahle, wobei ich durchaus ein Zuzahlrestaurant in Anspruch genommen hätte. Schließlich gibt es oft genügend Besucher an Bord (z. B. Reisebüromitarbeiter) und ich hätte dafür bezahlt. Aber bei P&O in Southampton konnte ich niemanden finden, der mir so wirklich weiterhelfen konnte.



It was planned in a different way. A table for 13 persons was reserved in De Oesterput in Blankenberge, Belgium. During our shore tour, our families would come from Germany. We would meet here for lunch. The travel agent (more to follow later) helped to find out the particular berth times because P&O normally did not publish them that none could arrange private tours. I also tried to ask if I could invite external guests as visitors onboard for lunch if I would pay for them and using an alternative dining venue. After all, they had many external visitors on board (like travel agents), and I would love to pay for them. But I could not find with P&O in Southampton, England anyone, who really loved to help me.

On March 22, 2016, Brussels, Belgium had the terror attacks. Before the text message arrived, I assumed that my plans would not become a reality. And I was right. They were afraid that there might be no public life on March 26, 2016.



Am 22.03.2016 waren die Terroranschläge in Brüssel. Bevor eigentlich die SMS kam, war mir klar, dass vermutlich alle Pläne ins Wasser fallen würden. Und ich sollte Recht behalten. Man befürchtete, dass möglicherweise kein öffentliches Leben am 26.03.2016 stattfinden würde.

Später kam noch eine Bestätigungsmail. Aufgrund der besonderen Umstände habe ich noch über unser Reisebüro anfragen lassen, ob wir günstig stornieren könnten, aber man bestand auf 95% Stornokosten.



Later a confirmation mail came. Due to the special circumstances, I let our travel agent requesting a free cancelation, but they insisted on 95% cancelation fee.

We considered to cancel all arrangements but my family said that we should go and we could catch up the party. The hotels in Blankenberge, Belgium, which should host our families (Eurohotel and Moeder Lambic) were more obliging. They kept the money, but the room could be used at a later time. Since Belgium introduced border inspections, the onward journey would be very strenuous. And you could not move very freely around Brussels. So we had to make new plans.



Wir hatten uns überlegt, alles zu stornieren, aber meine Familie meinte, dass wir fahren sollten und die Feier nachholen sollten. Die Hotels in Blankenberge, bei denen wir die Familien eingebucht haben (Eurohotel und Moeder Lambic) waren sehr viel kulanter. Das Geld haben sie einbehalten, aber sie dürfen zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt genutzt werden. Da nach Belgien Grenzkontrollen eingeführt wurden, wäre die Anreise eh schwierig geworden. Auch hätte man sich nicht so frei rund um Brüssel bewegen dürfen. Daher mussten wir alles neu planen.

In der Nacht mussten wir die Uhren umstellen. Für uns nicht so tragisch. Wir hatten gar nicht probiert letzte Nacht unsere innere Uhr umzustellen.

I wanted to browse around on the ship. First, I went outside to the open decks: an excellent impression.



Ich will mich auf dem Schiff umsehen. Zunächst geht es mal nach außen auf die Decks: ein schöner Eindruck.

I needed to put this into my mind.



Das muss erst mal in meinen Kopf rein: Alter ist kein Hindernis. Es ist eine Grenze, die man sich selbst im Kopf festgesetzt hat.

Einmal kurz zu den Außendecks am Heck. Hier ist die Raucherecke und besonders groß gekennzeichnet.

Es ist wirklich kein hässliches Schiff.

I went to the kids care. I had no idea why they placed my birthday greetings here. I did not book them for this location.



Es geht kurz an der Kinderbetreuung vorbei. Warum sie hier meine Geburtstagsgrüße angebracht haben, verstehe ich nicht. Hierhin hatte ich sie gar nicht gebucht.

Schade, dass es abgeschlossen ist. Das hätte ich mir doch zu gerne mal angesehen: The Cooking Club (Zuzahlrestaurant). Für den heutigen Abend haben wir übrigens kein Zuzahlrestaurant gebucht. Milburn hatte mir gestern Abend bereits die Karte für das Abendessen gezeigt und meinte, dass die Auswahl besonders gut wäre und es sich daher nicht lohnt.



So sad, that it was locked. I really would love to see The Cooking Club (Alternative dining venue). For that night we did not book any alternative dining. Milburn showed me last night the menu for tonight and said that the selection would be very nice and it would not be worth.

What was very good: on many spots you could see the alternative dining options on board so you could get all the information you needed to make your choice.



Was sehr gut ist: an vielen Orten wird auf das Angebot der Zuzahlrestaurants hingewiesen und so kann man sich schon sehr gut informieren.

The Crow's Nest. Kennen wir eigentlich nur von Holland America in der Form. Ich mag sehr diese Lounges, in der man schön nach vorne gucken kann.

The atrium: also a beauty. And certain my Elizabeth... the Godmother.



Das Atrium: auch sehr schön geworden. Und natürlich meine Elizabeth... die Taufpatin.

Wir sind ja eher auf den Schiffen von Holland America zu Hause. Deswegen wäre ich gar nicht auf die Idee gekommen, dass sie um 04:45 Uhr gerade Schluss machen hier in The Live Lounge. Für mich sieht das eher schon nach Vorbereitungen für den nächsten Morgen aus.



We were more home on ships of Holland America. So I did not expect that they would close here right at 04:45 hrs in The Live Lounge. It looked more like they were preparing everything for the next morning.

P&O stood for Peninsular and Oriental. Peninsular stood for the service from England to the Iberian peninsular and Oriental for the mail service to India.

The Limelight Club wäre noch eine schöne Alternative: Abendessen bei Live-Musik.

Aber der ist auch schon ausgebucht.

Here you could see the best the similarity to ROYAL PRINCESS 2013. The spa area on deck 5. And few more details which attracted my attention.



Hier sieht man am ehesten die Parallelen zur ROYAL PRINCESS 2013. Der Spa-Bereich auf Deck 5. Und noch so ein paar Kleinigkeiten, die mir in die Kamera gesprungen sind.

Sehr gut dargestellt: Es fallen 20% britische Mehrwertsteuer an.

Die Zuzahlrestaurants wurden also von CruiseCritic ausgezeichnet.

Sehr gut: Hinweise zum Thema Reservieren von Liegestühlen. Also kein typisch deutsches Problem.



Very good: advise regarding reserving sunbeds. So it was not a typical German appearance.

If they wrote somewhere where to find the Welcome-on-board-package in your cabin, everything would be perfect.



Wenn man nur noch schreiben würde, wo genau man das Willkommen-an-Bord-Paket in der Kabine findet, wäre ja alles gut.

Sogar auf die typischen Toiletten-Probleme wird öffentlich hingewiesen.

Sogar ein Fernseher, falls es langweilig wird.

Sieht nach älteren robusten Modellen ohne vielem digitalen Elektronik-Schnickschnack.

The cabin hallways were not numbered continuously from 1 to the end like in Germany but like in the US. Fire section wise: after A 331 it was not A 333 but A 401.



Die Kabinengänge werden ja nicht wie Deutschland vom Anfang bis zum Ende von der Nummer 1 durchgehend gezählt, sondern wie in den USA. Brandabschnittsweise: nach A 331 folgt nicht A 333 sondern A 401.

What I did not like less: they placed my Douglas Ward in a way that everyone could take it with them.



Was ich weniger gut finde: dass man meinen Douglas Ward so platziert, dass jeder hätte es mitnehmen können.

Was ich gut finde: mein Douglas Ward kommt unterschrieben zurück.



What I like very much: my Douglas Ward arrived with the signature.

The debarkation information and another letter from the board of P&O were kept ready for us.
