Tag/Day 1.1 auf der/on BRITANNIA in Southampton, England

Auf geht es. Gründonnerstag endet zum Glück die Arbeit bereits mittags. Auf nach Hause zum Kofferpacken.



Let's go. Maundy Thursday, fortunately, the work terminated already at noon. Going home to pack my suitcase.

On the way, we thought of cruise friends: chicken and rice.



Unterwegs denken wir an Kreuzfahrtfreunde: Hühnchen und Reis.

Zu unserem Erstaunen können wir zu Hause bereits die Gepäckanhänger ausdrucken. Nur keiner kann uns in Frankfurt bei Lufthansa erklären, wie man sie am Koffer anbringt.



To our astonishment, we could already print the luggage tags at home. But nobody could tell us in Frankfurt at Lufthansa how to attach them to the suitcase.

Wir haben noch ein wenig Zeit, so dass wir noch etwas zu Essen holen. Unsere leeren Flaschen wollen sie nicht zurück: angeblich sind sie im Transitbereich des Flughafens nicht verpflichtet, das Pfand zurückzuzahlen. Irgendwie habe ich aber noch ein Pastrami-Sandwich aus Basel in meiner Tasche.



We still had a little time, so we could get something to eat. They did not want to return our empty bottles: they were allegedly not obliged to repay the pledge in the transit area of the airport. Somehow I still had a pastrami sandwich from Basle, Switzerland in my pocket.

My usual combination: Coke and tomato juice.

Wir hatten nochmals Priority-Gepäckanhänger bekommen.



We got another time priority-baggage-tags.

But anyhow they were not useful: due to congestion at the conveyor belt our bags did not come. Our bags did not arrive.



Aber die haben uns leider auch nichts genützt: Wegen eines Staus am Gepäckband bleibt die Gepäckanlage stehen. Unsere Koffer kommen nicht.

Über Clifford Cars haben wir einen Wagen gebucht. Am einfachsten SMS an +44 7919 851979 (landet immer bei Tony). 100 GBP plus Parkkosten am Flughafen Heathrow (2016). Pünktlich wurden wir vor dem Gebäude (Zugang zun den Fahrstühlen zu den Parkdecks) abgeholt und direkt in unser Hotel Holiday Inn in Southampton gebracht. Hier erwarte uns eine Überraschung. Die Lobby war komplett umgebaut worden. Sehr schön. An der Bar finde ich die Snacks von The Dormen. Leider sind meine Lieblingssorten nicht mit dabei. Gibt es anscheinend nur bei British Airways. Zwei Gäste, die an der Bar etwas trinken wollen, werden abgewiesen, weil sie keine Hotelgäste sind und Zahlungen nur über das Hotelzimmer erfolgen können. Ich biete ihnen an, dass sie es über mein Zimmer abrechnen können und bekomme das Geld dann in bar. Zum Dank wollen sie mich auf einen Drink einladen, aber wegen der Zeitumstellung bin ich eh viel zu müde.



We booked a car with Clifford Cars. The easiest way would be to send a text message to +44 7919 851979 (always arrived with Tony). 100 GBP plus parking at Heathrow Airport (2016). We were collected on time in front of the terminal building (access to the elevators to the parking decks) and taken us right to our hotel Holiday Inn in Southampton, England. Here we experienced a nice surprise. They renewed the lobby entirely. Very lovely. At the bar, I could find snacks of The Dormen. But my favorite sort was not available. You could get them only with British Airways. Two guests were declined, who wanted to have a drink at the bar because they were no hotel guests and you could only be charged to your hotel room. I offered them to charge my room and got the money in cash. They wanted to invite me for a drink as thank, but due to the time change, I was too tired.

The room was fine. But unfortunately on the wrong side. It was sad that it was not renovated yet. It had a view over to the City Center Terminal and Carnival UK. But everything was there.



Zimmer ist in Ordnung. Leider die falsche Seite. Leider noch nicht renoviert. Mit einem Bllick direkt rüber zum City Center Terminal und zu Carnival UK. Es ist aber alles da.

Es kommt die BALMORAL morgens als erste rein. Es fällt mir jedoch ein Blauer Blitz auf. Wird um 04:30 Uhr morgens in einer Kabine geschweißt??? Komisch sieht es schon aus. Sicherheitshalber schreibe ich eine Mail an die Reederei und den Agenten. Nicht dass mal dort ein Brand wegen eines Kurzschlusses entsteht.



BALMORAL came in as first in the morning. A blue flash attracted my attention. Welding in a cabin at 04:30 hrs in the morning??? It looked extraordinary. For safety reason, I wrote an e-mail to the cruise company and the agent. To avoid they had a fire onboard due to fire.

Later when it was bright, I took a few more shots of BALMORAL.

Das Hotel bietet eine Menge für Kreuzfahrer. Packages inkl. Parken. Auch Gepäckaufbewahrung für Hotelgäste (aber nicht wie mancherorts beschrieben für Jedermann). Ich war ja doch unglücklich über die Lage des Zimmers. Ich erkläre Paul mein Anliegen. Leider hat er kein freies Zimmer in die Richtung der offenen See mehr frei. Kurzerhand gibt er mir ein Zimmer, das sich im Umbau befindet und so muss mein Hemd daran glauben, damit ich mich auf die Fensterbank lehnen kann. Ich bin auf jeden Fall sehr glücklich. Das Hemd musste eh in die Wäsche.



The hotel offered a lot for cruise ship passengers. Packages incl. parking. They also had baggage storage for hotel guests (but not for everyone as published on some spots). I was heartbroken on the location of the room. I explained to Paul my issue. Unfortunately, he had no room anymore facing to the open sea. Without further ado, he gave me a room which was blocked due to actual renovation work and so my shirt needed to become a pad on the windowsill that I could lean on. I was anyhow thrilled. The shirt needed to be laundered anyway.

And here she was: BRITANNIA of P&O. In the morning when she arrived and later during the day again.

Auf geht es zum Frühstück. Beim Einchecken gibt es es günstiger im Vorverkauf, als morgens direkt beim Kellner. Es ist im Grunde genommen alles da, was man für ein englisches Frühstück braucht. Nur der Kaffee taugt nicht unbedingt. Wären wir gestern Abend bereits angereist, hätten wir hier günstig zu Abend essen können.



We were heading for breakfast. When you pre-bought breakfast when were checking-in it would be cheaper than paying with the waiter. It was actually everything available to have an English breakfast. But the coffee was not a joy to drink. Would we already arrive in the evening, we could also have a cheap dinner here.

We had print-outs of the eDocs.



Eigentlich hatten wir alles bereits als eDocs ausgedruckt.

So waren wir eigentlich ein wenig verwundert, als wir einen Hinweis des Reisebüros (später mehr) bekamen, dass wir doch bitte die Manifestdaten vervollständigen sollten. Wir hatten doch alles schon drin, sonst hätten wir keine eDocs ausdrucken können. Wir bekommen nämlich alles nochmals als Broschüre ausgedruckt.



So we were somehow a little surprised when we got the advice of the travel agent (later more) that we should complete the manifest information. Everything was entered already. Otherwise, we could not get any eDocs. We got everything again as paper brochures.

Sehr stabil und sehr wichtig: sie werden auch für die Ausschiffung verwendet, also nicht sofort wegwerfen, wenn man an Bord ist.



Very solid and very important: they would be used for debarkation too, so do not dispose them, once you are onboard.

Since we were four days totally on tour and needed a suit (actually even a tuxedo) onboard, the small suitcase would not fit.



Da wir insgesamt vier Nächte unterwegs sind und einen Anzug (eigentlich sogar Smoking) an Bord brauchen, reicht der kleine Koffer nicht.

Ursprünglich wollten wir einen verlängerten Check-Out nutzen, den ich aufgrund des Status als Platin-Gast bekommen müsste. Aber man benötigt drigend die Zimmer. Wir organisieren unseren Vormittag so, dass wir später nur noch die Koffer abholen müssen und lassen sie einlagern. Wir sind ja schließlich Hotelgäste.



Originally, we wanted to use an extended check-out which I could use due to my status as Platinum-guest. But they urgently needed the room. We managed our morning that we later only needed to collect the bags and let them stored. We were hotel guests after all.

There was no chance to send a parcel on Good Friday. You could arrange something on the internet and drop-off at a supermarket. No stamps were allowed on parcels. I was desperate.



Karfreitag gibt es keine Chance Päckchen zu versenden. Man hätte etwas im Internet organisieren können, und dann in einem Supermarkt abgeben können. Briefmarken darf man für Päckchen nicht verwenden. Ich verzweifle.

Die Packstation ist nur für Amazon-Kunden. Leider nichts zum Versenden wie bei DHL in Deutschland.



The parcel station was only customers of Amazon. Nothing you could send parcels like with DHL in Germany.

Although it was Good Friday, all the stores were open. So we were browsing in the West Quay Shopping Center. With pleasure, I was discovering and smelling true croissants - no Swiss "Gipfelis".



Obwohl Karfreitag ist, sind alle Geschäfte geöffnet. So bummeln wir durch das West Quay Shopping Center. Mit Freude sehe und ich rieche echte Croissants - keine schweizerischen Gipfelis.

Die hätten sogar französisches Landbrot da. Lecker... aber wir gehen ja an Bord und fahren ja eh nach Frankreich. Und ab 2017 fährt ja direkt meine Straßenbahn (und nicht MEIN Tram statt MEINE Tram) direkt nach Frankreich. Also ein französisches Landbrot in England zu kaufen und es rüber mit nach Frankreich zu nehmen, ist so ähnlich als wenn man als Schweizer in Deutschland Schweizer Rösti in Portionspackungen kauft und es mit in die Schweiz nimmt und bekommt auch noch die Mehrwertsteuer aus Deutschland zurückerstattet. Aber wenn ich mein Brot nach Frankreich mitnehme, bekomme ich ja die britische Mehrwertsteuer in Frankreich nicht wieder... Wenn die Briten bloß endlich austreten würden... dann könnte ich sie wiederbekommen.



They even had French country bread. Yummy... but we went onboard and would go anyway to France. And from 2017 my tram would go directly to France. But buying a French country break in England and taking it over to France, would be the same like Swiss were buying Swiss Rösti (Swiss Potato Dish) in bags in Germany and taking it back to Switzerland and getting the refund of the VAT. Even I would take my bread to France; I would not get refunded my British VAT... Hopefully, they should exit... then I could get the money back.

Victoria's Secret... but I could not find anything suitable for me. I was not so much gay! But we also did not meet Heidi Klum here.

Wir gehen zu Fuel Juice Bar einen frischen Saft holen.



We went to Fuel Juice Bar to buy us a fresh juice.

Because of the danger of bombing of Great Britain, waste bins were rare. So I needed to walk a long way to dispose of the waste.



Weil Papierkörbe wegen Bombengefahr in Großbritannien immer sehr rar sind, muss man oft weite Wege laufen, um den Müll wieder loszuwerden.

"5 am Tag" (Obst oder Gemüse). Der Granatapfel ist ja sehr verführerisch.

But an apple too.



Ein Apfel aber auch.

Wir gehen noch etwas für unterwegs einkaufen: Wasser, englischer Senf und meine geliebten Mini-Poppadums.



We went around to make some more purchases: Water, English mustard and my beloved mini-poppadums.

Zeit wieder für eine Kaffeepause an der Espresso Bar, die zum Kaufhaus John Lewis gehört. Die Scones lachen uns an. Aber es bleibt bei holländischen Karamelsirup-Waffeln made in Wales... Irgendwie sind sie nicht für die Kaffeetassengröße genormt. Es passt einfach nicht.



It was time again for a coffee break at the espresso bar which was part of the John Lewis department store. The scones were smiling at us. But I had only a Dutch caramel waffle made in Wales. But they did not calibrate them for the size of the coffee cups. They did not fit.

In front of the mall, they set up a lot of food stands.



Vor dem Shopping Center sind sehr viele Essenstände aufgebaut.

Sah alles sehr schön aus und es duftete. Über den Griechen wäre ich ja gerne hergefallen.



It looked all so beautiful and smelled wonderful. I really would love to raid the Greek dealer.

Oh, Mary Poppins as a musical. But it should be the same, like the movie.

Hier gibt es aber Gepäckaufbewahrung - im Ocean's (150 High Street). Wegen der AIDA-Fahrten wird in vielen Geschäften deutsch gesprochen oder deutsche Produkte angeboten. Der gemeine Deutsche reist ja ins Ausland, um die gleichen Sachen zu konsumieren, die er auch zu Hause haben könnte... oder???



Here they had a baggage storage - in Ocean's (150 High Street). Due to the AIDA-cruises, in many stores, they spoke Germany or offered German products. The usual German loved to go abroad to have the same food like at home... or???

With Mail Boxes etc. (MBE), they fofered also baggage storage and dispatch: 151 High Street.

We had no interests anyway to be early on board and already having lunch on board. From earlier visits, we knew the Coriander Lounge. The food was still good. They expanded. You could feel with the staff. You could notice that they had more stress and were busy to have everyone running. But the food was still good.



Wir haben eh kein Interesse früh an Bord zu sein und an Bord bereits zu Mittag zu essen. Von früheren Besuchen kennnen wir die Coriander Lounge. Das Essen ist immer noch sehr gut. Sie haben sich vergrößert. Das macht sich beim Personal bemerkbar. Man merkt denen an, dass sie gestresster sind und dass man mehr mit sich selbst beschäftigt ist, um das Personal zu organisieren. Aber das Essen ist nach wie vor noch gut.

Da wir immer noch Zeit haben geht es eine Runde nach Hythe. Oh, bei der Hythe Ferry hat sich einiges getan. Den ganzen Tag habe ich Münzen gesammelt, um einen alten Fahrkartenautomaten zu füttern. Nun gibt es einen so modernen, der sogar Kreditkarten annimmt.



Since we still had some time we made a tour to Hythe. Oh, a few changes with the Hythe Ferry. The entire day I collected coins to feed the ticket machine. Now they had a modern one which also accepted credit cards.

And in Hythe, Tony of Clifford Cars expected for us. He took us to the Ocean Terminal and stopped on the way a few times that we could collect our baggage yet, etc.. And so a few nice shots of BALMORAL was taken.
