825. Hafengeburtstag in Hamburg. Typisch Hamburger Wetter und noch schlimmer. Es liegen ganz tolle Kreuzfahrtschiffe im Hafen, aber ich weiß nicht, ob ich will...



825th Port Anniversary in Hamburg, Germany. Typical Hamburg weather and much worse. There should be many great cruise ships in the port but I was not sure if I really want...

One single shot was possible to take of the Altona Cruise Terminal.



Eine einzelne Aufnahme vom Kreuzfahrtterminal Altona mit der MSC MAGNIFICA gelingt mir.

Dann fängt es an zu regnen.



Then it started to rain.

Then it started to hail.



Es fängt dann an zu hageln.

Ich gebe auf und verlasse die Fähre bereits bei den Docklands und bin naß bis auf die Knochen.



I gave up and left the ferry already at the Docklands stop and I was wet down to my bones.

It was no fun anymore. I suspended my project. I did not go on Maritime Circle Line anymore and went shopping: socks, raincoat, umbrella etc. etc. And then I went to our hotel to change my clothes.



Es macht keinen Spaß mehr. Ich breche das Projekt ab. Die Fahrt mit der Maritime Circle Line spare ich mir und fahre zum Einkaufen: Socken, Regenhaut, Regenschirm usw. usw. Und dann fahre ich ins Hotel, um mich zunächst einmal umzuziehen.

Normalerweise würden wir näher an Hamburg wohnen, aber weil ein Schiff jedoch bei Airbus in Finkenwerder festmachen wird, kämen wir dieses Mal auch im Rilano Hotel in Finkenwerder nicht klar, weil die Airbus-Werke noch davor wären und sie dann nicht daran vorbei fahren würde. Daher fiel dieses Mal die Entscheidung auf das Hotel Senator Marina in Wedel.



Normally we would stay much more closer to Hamburg but one ship would dock with Airbus in Finkenwerder (Suburb of Hamburg). So even we would stay in the Rilano Hotel in Finkenwerder as usual the Airbus-plant would be ahead of the hotel and she would not pass. So we decided to stay this time at Hotel Senator Marina in Wedel, Germany.

The rooms were not very exiting.



Die Zimmer sind nicht besonders aufregend.

Mein eigenes mobiles Internet ist schneller. Übrigens muss man schon 5-8 Minuten bis zur Elbe laufen, wenn man einen freien Blick will. Es gibt keine Zimmer mit Elbblick. Nur mit Ausblick auf die Konkurrenz meines früheren Arbeitgebers. Wenn das meine frühere Chefin liest, dass ich damals hätte wechseln müssen, nur um mir ein Büro mit Elbblick zu ergattern, dann würde sie garantiert tot umfallen. Also wenn sie mir jetzt ein Büro mit Elbblick versprechen würden, würde ich Erwägung ziehen, doch weiter Wochenendpendler zu werden... Bruno hätte ja auch etwas davon, wenn wir nicht immer die teuren Hotels in Hamburg mit Elbblick während des Hafengeburtstags buchen müssten... Meine damalige Chefin kann mir nur einen Blick auf die S-Bahn-Karlsruhe bieten und mein jetziger Chef ebenfalls nur auf die Eisenbahn... Da war doch noch eine alte Bewerbung in Kopenhagen direkt am Flughafen... nützt aber auch nichts, wenn die Schiffe nicht unter die Öresundbrücke dürfen...



My personal mobile internet was faster. By the way: you need to walk about 5-8 minutes until you reach the banks of the river Elbe incl. unobstructed view. There is no room with a river view. Just a view to the competitor of a previous company I was working for. If my former she-boss would read that I wanted to change just to have an office with a river-view then I am sure she would drop dead. So if they would promise me now an office with a river-view I would consider to stay as weekend commuter... Bruno would have a big benefit as we must not book any more the expensive hotels with river view during Port Anniversary in Hamburg... My former she-boss could only offer me a view to the commuter trains in South West Germany and current boss too... There would be also an older job application for Copenhagen, Denmark just at the airport... but that would not be helpful either in case you have ships which are not allowed to pass the bridge over the Sound (connecting Denmark and Sweden)...

No following anymore nowaday's trend but everything was clean - and that was most important.



Nicht mehr der neueste Chic, aber alles sauber - und das ist die Hauptsache.

Leider hat meine Kamera bei der 1. Runde einen Schlag abbekommen. Ein Fleck wird sich nicht mehr lösen lassen. Aber auch jetzt als die DELPHIN am Willkomhöft am Schulauer Fährhaus vorbeizieht, peitscht der Regen waagerecht rein. Keine Chance für gute Aufnahmen.



During Round No. 1 my camera got hit. You cannot ignore one spot on the pictures. But even now then DELPHIN was passing by the Welcome Point of Schulau Ferry-Building the rain just came from the straight. No chance to make any good pictures.

Few hours later: Round No. 2. I could easily skip the Maritime Circle Line as she was operating anymore and ships which supposed to be a certain pier (O'Swaldpier) were not there when the last sailing was passing by. So another time again to join the ferry towards the Landing Bridges from Övelgönne.



Einige Stunden später: 2. Runde. Die Maritime Circle Line kann ich mir schenken, weil sie nicht mehr fährt und die Schiffe, die am O'Swaldkai liegen sollten, waren eh zu dem Zeitpunkt der letzten Fahrt gar nicht da. So geht es in Övelgönne zum 2. auf die Hafenfähre Richtung Landungsbrücken.

Und manchmal hat man einfach nur Glück, weil man zufällig auf einer bestimmten Fähre ist und auf einmal einem die AIDAluna entgegenkommt.



Sometimes you are just a lucky man because you are on the right ferry and AIDAluna was passing you.

After every rain you have sun. And it was really true... Just when the ferry arrived at Docklands MSC MAGNIFICA set sail but towards the Landing Bridges. So we caught her.



Nach jedem Regen folgt Sonnenschein. Und so war es tatsächlich... Just als die Fähre Dockland erreicht, haut die MSC MAGNIFICA ab, jedoch in Richtung Landungsbrücken. Wir holen sie aber bald ein.

Als ich dann an den Landungsbrücken aussteigen muss, weil die Fähre nicht mehr bis zum Sandtorhöft weiterfährt, zieht die MSC MAGNIFICA vorbei.



When I had to get off at the Landing Bridges because they discontinued the service to another part of the port MSC MAGNIFICA was passing by.

And in this moment she started with her birthday serenade "Happy Birthday to You".



Und in diesem Augenblick beginnt sie mit ihrem Geburtstagsständchen "Happy Birthday to You".

Unter viel Applaus und Gelächter spielt sie dann mit dem Schiffshorn: "Seven National Army" von The White Stripes.



She got much applause and laughters when she started to play with the typhoons: "Seven National Army" by The White Stripes.

That was not mine. But they had a lot of fun onboard and ashore.



Das ist nun gar nicht meins. Aber an Bord hat man Freude und an Land auch.

Unbemerkt kommt die Fähre der Linie 72 und ich gehe an Bord. Es kommt so gut wie niemand mit. Alle sind noch sprachlos von der Darbietung der MSC MAGNIFICA. Ich habe richtig Glück. Nicht nur mit dem Wetter, sondern MSC MAGNIFICA fährt bis zur Hafen City vor und dreht dort. Und in der Zeit macht die Fähre zunächst an der Elbphilharmonie eine Pause und später nochmals an der Arningstraße, weil ja Werktag ist. So bekomme erlebe ich hautnah wie die MSC MAGNIFICA wendet. Auf dem Weg zurück zu den Landungsbrücken überholen wir sie dann nochmals. Perfekter hätte es für mich nicht laufen können und eine satte Entschädigung für den Hagelschauer und die defekte Kamera.



None noticed the arrival of ferry route 72 and I went on board. Nobody was following me onboard. Everyone was speechless of the performance of MSC MAGNIFICA. I got more luck. Not just with the weather because MSC MANGNIFICA went to another part of the port and turned around. In this time period my ferry had a break at the new opera builing Elbphilharmonie and later at the adjunstant pier in the port because it was working day. So I could experience close to the ship how she turned around. On the way back to the Landing Bridges we passed by again. It could not become more perfect and it was a full compensation for the hail in the afternoon and the damaged camera.

My luck went on - even it was a small one. So it was also possible to take few pictures of DEUTSCHLAND.



Das Glück ging weiter, wenn auch bescheiden. So waren ein paar Bilder noch von der DEUTSCHLAND möglich.

Sie hätte eigentlich lt. Liste am O'Swaldkai liegen sollen.

Before you might think that due to my lucky night as shipspotter I forgot to go to the train station to meet Bruno: No - I had enough self-discipline to meet him and he must not use the commuter train towards Wedel.



Und bevor jemand denkt, dass ich vor lauter Shipspotter-Glück Bruno vergessen hätte, am Bahnhof abzuholen: Nein - ich war displiziniert genug, ihn abzuholen und er musste nicht mit der S-Bahn nach Wedel fahren...

In einem Punkt hatte ich allerdings richtig Pech. L'AUSTRAL war im Hafen, aber sie war erst so spät da, dass ich mit der Maritime Circle Line sie auch nicht hätte am O'Swaldkai fotografieren können.



But with one item I really had unluck. L'AUSTRAL was in port but she arrived so late that I even had no chance to take pictures with the Maritime Circle Line.

I could not calm down to sleep. So I had to get out at 01.00 hrs again in Wedel when L'AUSTRAL was passing by. But everytime when I went out it started to rain cats and dogs. Under the circumstances that I was walking all the night out and in Bruno might better stay in the railway mission and had maybe a better sleep...



Das lässt mir eben keine Ruhe. Also geht es um 01.00 Uhr nachts nochmals in Wedel raus, als die L'AUSTRAL uns dort passiert. Nur jedes Mal, wenn ich rauslaufe, regnet es in Strömen. Unter diesen Umständen, dass ich ständig rein und rauslaufe, wäre es für Bruno u. U. doch besser gewesen, in der Bahnhofsmission zu übernachten...
