Tag/Day 0 auf dem Weg zur/on the way to VISTA SKY in Köln/Cologne, Germany

CELEBRITY CONSTELLATION, MSC SEAVIEW, ARTANIA, QUEEN MARY 2 and MSC VIRTUOSA too. The latter is replaced by the MSC GRANDIOSA, but with a different travel length and different ports. For me, it's reasons to be depressed. It does not go on with the cruises, and it does not go on professionally because of Covid-19. This is how I learn in my therapy: Life still makes sense, and it goes on. If the ocean cruise does not work, you have to look for alternatives, instead of embarking in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates embarking in Cologne, Germany. I grew up in Mönchengladbach, Germany (1 hour away from Cologne): what should I do in Cologne? But you just have to learn to filter the positive out of the current events, instead of just getting annoyed that I wasted time, for example, for taking the riding lessons for Petra and arrival on the back of a horse like India Jones. But I would have been “inedible” for other cruisers anyway because, at that point, I was no longer feeling well, and I could no longer be happy. So everything on reset and the positive: Bruno's parents come along and the negative: Bruno still has a training session on Monday and has to follow us. That is too much stress for me alone: the highland of Odenwald, where we live - Saarland, where Bruno's parents live (2 hours away) - Rhineland, where the ship departs (another three hours away). Although the embarkation starts on Tuesday at 15:00 hrs - there is not so much stress but traveling on Tuesday morning. So I set off on Sunday to pick up Bruno's parents on Monday. I treat them like my parents: I don't show up there the night before leaving. This is a panic evening. I prefer to stay by myself. I drive past Kaiserslautern, Germany ("K-Town"), and visit the Japanese Garden. Well: I now know why the admission costs only 6.00 EUR (2020 - 7.00 USD), and it reminds very little of the beautiful gardens in Japan that we visited during our travels on CELEBRITY MILLENNIUM 2014 or DIAMOND PRINCESS 2016. The wooden bridge would have been a highlight, but it is closed. And I find the view of the Fritz-Walter Soccer Stadium (better known as Betzenberg) much more exciting than, for example, the Zen garden here.

It continues to the home of the former SED (East German Communist Party) general secretary Erich Honecker: Neunkirchen, Germany. In a short time, we are here for the second time. Last we were here to charge Bruno's electric car for free and to use the time to eat. Hotel stays in the age of Covid-19 means that the rooms are "bare". The rooms in a Holiday Inn Express are pretty "naked" by themselves. It goes without amenity items like coffee and tea, which are only available on request. I only had one problem: a medicine that needs to be kept cool: it is simply bagged and can then be held in the guest fridge at the reception.

The Saarland and especially Neunkirchen are connected with coal and steel. The remains of this industrial history are right around the corner from me: the old hut area "AHA". Individual fragments worth preserving characterize the cityscape.

The Mexican restaurant Iguana is also integrated with the old hut area "AHA". It is interesting to see: I have to register using the app. Somehow I feel that I am sick: I do not feel like meat, and I order falafel (Oriental chickpea balls) from a Mexican: I must be sick! At the latest, after I have eaten it, I am determined. For therapeutic reasons, I have ordered a few quesadillas. They are delicate and taste, just like Taco Bells in the USA. The guacamole does not reach the level of those prepared at the table on NORWEGIAN SUN 2019. That was great. I actually wanted to eat "Gefüllte" (Saarland specialty: stuffed potato dumplings), but there is probably no restaurant nearby on a Sunday evening, which offered them.

Breakfast at the Holiday Inn Express usually means buffet breakfast. But the night before, I was asked at reception what I would like to have for breakfast. The tables are much further apart. You can only have breakfast in a booked time slot.

The registration of guests in a classic way on paper.

Erfassung der Gäste klassisch über Papier.

Und alles kommt auf einem Tablett.

Everything arrived on a tray.

In Switzerland, I got to know a drug that requires a prescription there and costs around 20.00 CHF (= 20.00 USD). By coincidence, I discovered that the drug is available without prescription in France in small containers and only costs 3.50 EUR (= 4.00 USD). I am considering whether I should perhaps open a drug distribution company in Switzerland. The drug is not available in Germany. I wasn't allowed to go to France while the border was closed amid COVID-19. I did not find a medication home order service to addresses in Germany. I then wrote to our regular taxi driver from Marseille, France: Chantal (Contact information by e-mail request or check with my Facebook friends). It was the first time she saved our lives with my Goslar colleagues on our trip on NORWEGIAN EPIC 2012, and most recently, when the yellow vests (against increased energy costs, etc.) protested, she brought us safely on MSC SEAVIEW 2018. I am not sure if she has ever driven us "normally". So I asked my personal French "Wonderwoman" to get me the medicine and send it to me by mail. It took less than a week. I wanted to say thank you... and it took almost six weeks back!!! So whoever has a problem - regardless of transport by taxi or something else: just contact Chantal!!! But now I can go back to France and walk until the pharmacy opens all the time around the bushes. I have the impression that one or the other is inclined to call an ambulance with a straitjacket.

 border=0

Bruno says stiffly and firmly that he has already taken me to the fortress Chateau des Ducs de Lorraine in Sierck-Les-Bains, France on the French-German-Luxembourg border. I say: no. If we separate one day, everyone knows: it's up to the fort!!!

The cemetery is located next to the pharmacy. I think back to our cemetery visits with Francisca of West Blue Dreams in Porto, Portugal, on the occasion of our trip on KONINGSDAM 2016 and with Nina of BSAS4U in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on the time of our journey on NORWEGIAN SUN 2019. But no celebrity like Evita Perron is buried here. Or in Liverpool, England with Debbie of Fab4TaxiTours (booked via Cavern Club Liverpool) on the way to VENTURA 2018: the grave of Eleanor Rigby (The Beatles). Therefore it is not an uninteresting place.

I collect Bruno's parents and I actually want to eat there when we were traveling in reverse from QUEEN VICTORIA 2018. But Covid-19 changed everything. The restaurant is only open in the evening and certainly not on Mondays. Looking for alternatives, I have to say: Mondays in the Eifel Highlands are a good day to go on a zero diet. A safe place today is the restaurant Gasthaus Wermelskirchen in Bergisch Gladbach, near Cologne, Germany. Udo and Diana were on the ship after our first cruise on LILI MARLEEN 2006, and the last time we saw them was at the ASTOR 2012. In between, I went here twice. By knowing this fact and I can drive relaxed. Like on the ship: last order is 14:00 hrs (for us) and not that we have to pay until 14:00 hrs and have to be outside again. But we get through thoroughly and are there a little earlier. I have a decision problem: chanterelles, schnitzel, or "Flöns" (Rhineland blood sausage/black pudding). Or all together. I get everything together... not as a stew... but schnitzel with flöns is extraordinary. For the willingness to wait and feed us, I also give them "I Love Cruising". They have been with 1AVista and think that the food is good. I've got used to it now: a different cruise, a diverse crew, and things can go the other way round. How many said at the beginning of my cruise-voyage "career" how great Celebrity was, and I just thought it was terrible on CENTURY 2008. And the other way around, everyone warned me about LILI MARLEEN 2006, and I was pleasantly surprised there. Now Udo is a gastronomy professional, and his word certainly counts more. To say it in advance: You always have to differ between four types of cruise providers. US-International (the big ones), Italy-International (MSC/Costa), British-National (Fred Olsen/CMV), and German-National. Honi soit qui mal y pense - and that others understand how it is meant: Phoenix/Transocean (CMV Germany)/Hansa (bankrupt)/Delphin (bankrupt)/Ambiente (out of business)/Plantours/ Holiday (bankrupt). 1AVista does not come close to the level of the US-International. They don't compete with them either, but they made a good impression within the German-National companies. But more of that later when we're on board. In any case, there was no opportunity, and above all, no reason to try out whether deliveries on board during a stay in a lock are possible with the Lieferando-App (Food delivery). Let's see when the paths of Udo and Diana and us cross again.

1AVista said nothing to me beforehand. I hardly ever read the section on river cruises on the German cruise forum kreuzfahrten-treff.de. I admit that the following statements by others prevent me from giving it a chance: River cruises are something for (very) old people. I'm (only) 54. River cruises are boring because there is hardly any on-board entertainment: no zip line, no climbing wall, no ice show, no aqua show, no auto scooters, no bowling alley. Everything is narrow, especially in the cabins. Voyages on rivers mean eating at the canteen level. I have two previous short river experiences: PREMICON QUEEN 2008. No more locks again... Nuremberg, Germany - Bamberg, Germany - Würzburg, Germany... friendly crew onboard... Superb Sauce Hollandaise on request, even though it was not on the menu... lousy organization... 5th wheel on the car because later it became a partial charter and everything was focused on the group. Suddenly it was a one-way instead of a roundtrip tour and an expensive logistical problem. But the cabins were good! Only the PREMICON QUEEN no longer exists... And AMELIA 2014... friendly cruise director, but idiot fellow travelers. I guess I wanted to pour a pot of midnight soup over the other's head. And it was so loud and "rocking" that I tried to disembark after one single night in Rüdesheim, Germany. I had called my German travel agent Sonnendeck Seereisen that I wanted to travel, and even if the managers Jens and Raoul need to rent a rowing boat and personally row me through the oceans. Only the river cruises remained realistic because Jens and Raoul were unwilling to row me through the world. And the price of the trip was excellent. And all-inclusive. The only problem: the call center of the tour operator. 3/5 cases were not handled well by an external call-center. My travel agency and I, as an individual traveler, had the impression that the external call center had only a minimal idea of cruises. One had the feeling that they just answer the phone as 1AVista when a particular light flashes. Maybe they also sell sex toys, life insurance, and used cars in between. And they do precisely what I am doing too by checking on the terrible homepage. Their standard answer: "The Homepage is maintained by an external company: we cannot tell you why it is still in there... " and they confirm everything to our travel agency or me what we already knew. The could not handle questions that went deeper. But what should happen worse since Bruno's car is in Frankfurt, we are passing within sight of his office: In the worst case, we pull the emergency brake and get out in Frankfurt-Niederrad, Germany. So we give it a chance. I get my first maritime community mask from Carmen (fneumeier from kreuzfahrten-treff.de). In Neunkirchen of all places, we got two more. And I commissioned my own "I Love Cruising" mask. Shortly before our departure, the VISTA SKY is brought out of its slumber in the Netherlands and christened. In any case, my 2020 cruise does not look the way Decathlon imagines it on the advertising poster.

1AVista sagte mir zuvor gar nichts. Nürnberg - Bamberg - Würzburg... nette Crew an Bord... Und alles all inclusive.

Was liegt also näher, als kurz am Schiff vorbeizufahren.

The ship is located in the Deutz neighborhood in Cologne on the right bank of the river Rhine, and Bergisch Gladbach is also on the right bank of the river Rhine. So what could be more evident than passing the ship briefly? Again it is love at first sight. There are ships and companies that I hate, but as soon as I stand in front of a cruise ship, I can't hold back as a shipspotter: whether friend or foe: every ship is beautiful. There were a few questions that we (both the travel agent and I) could not resolve. Jens said at some point: ask on board - that should be easier than clarifying it here via the (external) call center. There should only be 100/181 passengers: there should be free cabins, and due to Bruno's father's mobility restrictions, we would have liked to have them nearby. We are in 202 (directly at the reception) and Bruno's parents in 322. In the meantime, the cabin opposite was free, and we immediately tried to make it clear to the (external) call center that we would like them and that they would like to keep the higher price for the upper deck can. You should simply deliver the sparkling wine, the fruit, and the voucher for the steak house to cabin 202. The external call center did nothing, and the cabin was gone the next day! Everything on board is very ghostly: everyone is masked, and everyone is in the process of making room. The crew arrives. To say it in advance: everything went much better and more relaxed than I personally expected. Anyone who booked to puke directly was severely disappointed that there were very few reasons to complain. Despite the hustle and bustle, hotel manager Birgit takes a few minutes for me and arranges everything for us that Bruno's parents are next to us. And a little more: instead of coming twice tomorrow (we have a wheelchair and a walker with), she offers us that we can leave the wheelchair there now. Many of my problems were solved within seconds. I would have liked to thank you with a handshake and a smile. I think it's a shame that she couldn't see the look of relief on my face after the short visit. Bruno's father didn't have to walk far now. And it is only on the day of departure that I accidentally notice that the owner of Riverman Cruises Robert Heijlands has probably made his cabin available to us. He took the many steps that Bruno's father was spared.

Since we have a one-way journey and 1AVista no longer wanted to offer outward and return transfers at the time of booking, we take rental cars from Sixt via the German ADAC automobilist club. Unfortunately, Hertz did not survive the Covid-19 crisis and filed for bankruptcy. The office in our hotel behind the central station is already permanently closed. It would have been so convenient if we could have rented with them. I get an upgrade from Sixt: an Audi Q3 - only there is no space for the wheelchair. I had ordered a van of the Volkswagen Touran style. Because I did online check-in, I couldn't just leave the Audi Q3 behind and drive myself to the other Sixt branch at the central station in Mannheim, Germany, to pick up a Mercedes-Benz Vito (9-seater). Apparently, there was nothing else available. A Volkswagen Touran is available on site. They give it to me too. Unfortunately, it has not been cleaned. I have already lost so much time that I do not complain about it again. Wheelchair, walker, and luggage all went in. Only Apple CarPlay doesn't work correctly. But Sixt later promises that nothing of the sort will happen on the return trip and in advance: they keep their promise!

A selfie with the Cologne Cathedral.

And my usual selfie with the rescue ring and the Cologne Cathedral.

Und mein übliches Selfie am Rettungsring mit Kölner Dom

Und ohne Kölner Dom.

And without the Cologne Cathedral.

Hmm... How would the Captain get to the ship bell during maneuvering?

Hmm...

While I was talking with Hotel Director Birgit, Bruno's parents were waiting in the viewing distance to the Cologne Cathedral.

At this point, we would pass again here tomorrow.

We stay at the Wyndham Hotel on the back of Central Station. It is very convenient for Bruno when he arrives by train. Reservation is difficult: if you want points (although it would not have mattered anyway because my card is no longer active), you cannot book in booking portals, and standard rooms are no longer offered on your own website, but only suites. I had a contact person who unfortunately left the hotel. This is how we get the unrenovated cheese clamps, or they made it even more spartan because of Covid-19: without cupboard doors (etc.), without functioning toilet flush. They actually wanted to renovate all the rooms, but apparently, they ran out of money. Because my last visit was a while ago and I had a renovated room. The view of Cologne Cathedral at night is fantastic, but at 02:00 hrs, I don't go any further: too many bizarre folks. They make no effort to offer an adequate breakfast. This is too much work for them: there are, therefore, only breakfast boxes.

I walked a little around with Bruno's parents. One round around the Cologne Cathedral.

I moved 1970 to the Rhine area. And we and all our visitor were taken here.

Actually, I never wanted to return.

Recently, Josée and Steven from Canada were here. We knew them from our voyage on KONINGSDAM 2016, and I went into the inside and participated in a fascinating guided tour in the Cathedral.

Again, she was beautiful still.

And so I was happy to join them for the walk.

Since the ancient Romans were also active around Trier, Germany, there was no reason to see the Roman-Germanic Museum.

Furthermore, it was closed on Mondays anyway.

It was afternoon, and it was so calm.

Nachmittags und so leer.

Ich genieße den Anblick von den Blumen.

I enjoyed the view of the flowers.

Just opposite our hotel, there is a travel agency.

Travel agent Frenzen. Here, Claudia and Lothar are active, whom we met on DIAMOND PRINCESS 2016.

I was wondering about the decoration. Princess does typically not usually appear in German travel agencies since the German sales agent is a little active only. And now, they are?

Later I learned: the decoration was initiated by Claudia. I was wondering.

We have dinner in a traditional Cologne Beer (Kölsch)-Restaurant Gaffel am Dom with Claudia and Lothar. It's nice to talk about shared experiences again. Bruno's parents get to know the baskets here. One more time, I have real Rhineland style black bread (from the traditional bakery Zimmermann) to go with or unsuitable for potato pancakes with salmon.

Although it is only a few hundred yards (once across the station) we call two rickshaws at Burkhard von Rikscha Köln. He appears on time with his colleague Christoph in front of the restaurant.

We make a small round through the old town of Cologne, which we could not have gone through in the form. For example, they show us the parent company of 4711 Eau de Cologne Water, and its inventor Farina 1709, the Cologne icons Tünnes and Schäl (representing typical Cologne humor and criticizing their habits. So we have the necessary severity bed.
